Unofficial Coaching Search Thread

Really doesn't surprise me that Tennessee's athletic department is looking for someone that'll be cheap instead of ponying up big time cash for a well known coach. Guarantee we'll end up with someone similar to Martin's resume. Hart tends to shop at the Dollar General a lot.

Several national writers (ESPN’s Jeff Goodman, Yahoo’s Pat Forde, and others) have ruled Wichita’s Gregg Marshall, VCU’s Shaka Smart, and Dayton’s Archie Miller out of the running for the Tennessee job. All three were long shots to begin with and nothing we’ve heard locally or read nationally has changed that.

It is no accident that 3 of the most winning coaches in Tennessee basketball lore had very winning ways before they arrived. J Greene had won over 70 % of his games before arriving. Pearl and Mears had both won over 80%. That is why I find it unacceptable behavior on Hart's part to bargain shop for a coach that is likely doomed for failure. If he does not have the money to get Marshall or Smart ( or if they will not come ), then I think a more proven coach at a smaller school that has won 70 to 80 % of their games is what we should be looking for. If the name is from left field and he has won around 85% of his games ( as both Mears and Pearl did) then I am willing to try that coach.

Pitinio has no interest in the job either....Mack and Cronin both are coaching at their alma maters....They aren't going anywhere...the list is getting shorter by the day....White and Tyndall are realistic candidates.

Impressed.....great post. Mack, Cronin I would really like and I think would be big hires. Something about hiring White excites me. Not surprised if Hart did turn overtures from Tubby and Howland away.

If we could get Marshall for 2million and don't we deserve to suck at basketball. Also with Howland sitting out there and we wind up with some of those guys the same could be said.

Thanks for the summary BTO. If that is the list I think I like Mack and then White. If we are going to pay enough to get cronin then we should pay a little more for marshall or smart.

Your percentages are a bit high, especially on Jerry Green, he was probably closer to 55-60 percent, I know he was 72-70 at Oregon.

But I do like guys with 5+ years of high level winning. Guys who can bring a program out of hard times too.

With a holiday weekend upon us, there has been some thought that Tennessee's search for a new basketball
coach might not hit high gear until next week.

However that doesn't appear to be the case. Sources today have told Volquest that Tennessee was on the
move. The trip made by Vice Chancellor and Director of Athletics Dave Hart and others was estimated at 3-5 hours. We have not been able to confirm a location with absolute certainty or who the Vols' contingent might have seen other than it's been indicated to us from multiple sources that the travel may have been to a location north of Knoxville.

Obviously, there are several names who have been mentioned as possible candidates who work north of
Tennessee. Richard Pitino is at Minnesota. Archie Miller is at Dayton, Chris Mack is at Xavier and Mick Cronin is at Cincinnati.

Cronin seems the least likely of the group as it was indicated to Volquest that Cronin wasn't going to be the coach at Tennessee with an indication that Tennessee wasn't interested in him more than anything. Remember, Cronin is paid well
at Cincinnati and is also a life long fan of the Bearcats and is a Cincinnati native. But with a new athletics director, there has been some thought that he would listen to the Vols. However, it doesn't appear any conversations are likely to happen.

Again, we believe Tennessee was on the move today, but we haven't confirmed the location or the candidate at this point. We are continuing to dig for more information.

3-5 hours, if true and the Cronin stuff is true, I'd guess Miller or Mack. No way to get to Minneapolis and do much in that time frame.

Marshall would not pick up the phone for less than 2.5 IMO. Very likely it takes 3 million to get him to call the movers.

3-5 HRS could have just about anyone still in play. UT could have met anyone at a neutral site. Just because a coach works in Texas does not mean Easter weekend he could not be somewhere N of Knoxville or w/ever.

They hired Haith before investigation

Actually, after looking at the timeline, they were turned in to the NCAA in February 2011 and the NCAA began investigating Shapiro and his claims then.

So they were under investigation already, not 100% sure what Missouri knew, but judging by the volume of lies Haith told the NCAA, I doubt he admitted to Missouri he was involved in all the crap going down.
