Recruiting Forum: Football Talk XI

JRM took Sapp's spot.

Maggitt took Brewer's spot. The difference is that he is not coming off the field in nickel, he is dropping down to the DL.

Sapp and Brewer played poorly last year. I think both are tremendous upgrades.

I thought Sapp played well in spots. I can't recall Brewer doing all that much.

I'm late coming to the discussion on the O&W game. We didn't come home immediately after the game. I have a detailed review, but will only post thoughts that have not been overly discussed.

The playmakers on offense are just incredible. They just overpowered the entire defensive backfield. Even Sutton was torched. North, Malone, Pearson, Croom, Smith, Johnson. It has been a long time since we had that many playmakers. Wow!!!

Don't count out the freshmen DBs, especially Moseley and Payne. They may be biting on moves now but they will learn and improve.

Since I thought the game would be replayed on TV, I focused mainly on the OL. Thanks UTAD. I didn't think the 1st OL got much of a push against the 1st DL in the running game. But the coaching staff is not showing much of the blocking schemes for public viewing. I was a bit surprised that Wiesman was the 2nd center and not at guard. Overall, I thought the OL performed better than I expected. I just about had cardiac arrest when Gilliam went down and had to be helped from the field. Good news was he came back later. Two notes: The first player to go to the bench and sit down was Blair and that was in the first half. I was a bit surprised. He was so tired after one series???? Maybe I missed it, but Raulerson didn't see the field until the last 2 series in the 4th quarter along with Simcox. I was really shocked about that. Now, I expected him to redshirt next season, but to sit almost all of the spring game was strange. 1st OL Gilliam, Jackson, Crowder, Kerbyson, and Thomas. No surprises there. 2nd OL Blair, Sanders, Weisman, Pair, and Kendrick. Thought Sanders and Kendrick showed improvement. Pleased to see them coming along.

Edit: I forgot to mention the mess between Weisman and the guards in the 2nd half sack. They let a LB come straight up the middle untouched and the QB got crushed. Definitely need better communication, but that will come.

Just a few thoughts on the kicking and punting.
Bullock had better distance than Brodus. But just like last spring, Brodus's kicks get up in the air much faster that Bullock's. My concern is the threat of blocks on the longer kicks. On the points after, Brodus's kicks were at least 5 yards higher through the uprights than Bullock's. It's funny. It was like seeing Parlady vs Brodus last spring. Parlady improved during the season so I hope Bullock does the same.

Darr during the warm-ups was consistently punting 50-55 yards with almost 5 seconds hang time. However, during the scrimmage periods his kicks were not as high and the hang times were 4-4.5. Now, please understand that I was not using a stopwatch. I was just counting. Parlady's punts were higher than Darr's and the hang time was better. Darr looked much improved and I'm feeling better about him during the season. He just needs to be consistent.

The Circle of Life was fun to watch. I give Foreman credit, he never quit. Croom just pushed him around like a blocking sled. After Foreman went to ground, Croom seemed to let up in the drill especially after his helmet came off. No need to embarrass him in front of 68K. Mixon was a good example of how much freshmen need to get stronger to compete in the SEC. Johnson is a beast as a freshmen. One wonders just how good he will be 1-2 years. He did a decent job against Kendrick. Kendrick is a big kid. While JRM schooled Hurd, lets not forget that Hurd is not as near as strong as JRM because of the shoulder injury. He will get where he needs to be.

Lawson needs to receive tons of credit for the increase in strength of the team overall. They look bigger and definitely more physical.

My "under-the-radar" surprise was the RB transfer Pickett. He showed good speed and did a decent job of exploding through seams. There was a run in the 2nd half when he was moving to his left, saw a seam, and cut back into the hole for a nice gain. Liked his vision, burst, and overall speed.

Nice summary, thanks man. I remember the coaches being high on Pickett before he his hardship waiver to play immediately was denied last season. Looking forward to him giving us some depth this year with Paulk likely redshirting.

Glad someone got it

Brewers career accomplishment to me was a couple 1st downs he prevented spying on Shaw in the win against S Carolina this year. Might have been one of the reasons we won. I'm sure JRM could've pulled it off too. Hats off to Jancek actually more than Brewer.

He doesn't get a lot of love for his actual coaching, but I think Thig did a really nice job with the LBs last year. He went from having 4/5-star talent at the Barn to a 26 year-old retired baseball player, a former 2-star recruit, and one actual SEC MLB and somehow made it into a passable LB corp.

Thanks for the review. I really think Weisman may be starting over Crowder come this fall. Crowder may be more polished but Weisman is an animal ready to destroy the person in front of him

Current team rankings per Rivals....

Utah State-73rd
Vandy-53rd
Florida-39th
Ohio State-28th
Auburn-23rd
USC-24th
Nebraska-8th
UT-5th

Just thought it was interesting.... Also from 2011-2014, Utah State has averaged the 102nd best class according to Rivals.

I'm not too familiar with many of the potential hoops coaches on the list a few pages back.

I just wanna say if we have an opportunity to somehow land a "home run hire" and we don't bc of money I'm gonna be very disappointed. If we have the chance to land a big-time coach we need to make it happen.

There's really no reason UT hoops can't be a top 15 program consistently with our facilities and everything else as long as we have the right guy leading this program. It was already proven just a few short years ago. This can be a basketball school along with football (and baseball too).

I'm not saying I think we necessarily have to pay someone in the 2+ million range to get the right guy bc maybe we get lucky and get one of the lesser known guys who turns out to be a machine like Butch has so far in football (and yes we got lucky having the job fall to CBJ as our 4th or so option, imo, very lucky). The odds of that happening again aren't very good though, imo, so swing for the fences. Screw it.

Whoever it is, regardless of salary or name, I just hope they bring an infectious energy that gets VN united and exited about basketball again like we saw under BP(and now with Butch in football).

Yeah, Zo was a nice guy but he was booooooring. I want a coach who has his players ready to run through a brick wall for him and shows some intensity on the sidelines. I'm sure Zo's players here liked him but can you imagine him giving a pre game speech where the team was ready to explode out of the locker room? I can't. He made me wanna fall asleep just listening to him. Give me a coach who can motivate and generate a buzz again in TBA and someone who doesn't look overwhelmed and confused during games, especially in crunch time. The rest will take care of itself. JMO

Thanks for the updates. This thread and the RF brings sanity to VN. I have to carry a concealed weapon to venture into the FF or BF. They are bizarre at times.
The heck with a concealed weapon; Call in "puff the magic dragon" for a pre-emptive strike. Just make sure to have your glint tape on your dome.

Tiny fell out of the top 2 rounds in Kiper's new mock. Now he has James going to Seattle with the last pick in the second. Only Vol in his top 2 rounds with probably 6-7 other OTs ahead of both.

Predicted Mettenberger to Titans in the second for anyone who cares.

Leaving the RF is like walking into frantic apocalypse. One guy says Pearl hasn’t inked his deal, the other claims to know who the new coach is and one even said he knows the exact contract amount but can’t say or he would give up his source. Meanwhile, several keyboard testosterone fights have broken out and pissing matches are at their finest. I then turn and run back to the RF door, close it behind me and lock it, hoping to never leave again.

I warn you, it’s tempting to want to see more info. But before you do, just remember “you can think about it, but don’t do it”.
