Martin radio Interview

He may be if he left for similar money when he finds out what the cost of living is in Berkeley. He better hope money isn't an issue. $1.3 mil goes a lot further in Knoxville than it does in Berkeley, CA.

In Knoxville money he's getting $80,000 a year

The "it's not about money" statement is pure BS. Yeah, I'm sure you would work for minimum wage there Cuonzo. It is about money. It may not be the main reason, but it is a reason. His main problem was peace of mind and having a longer contract with Cal. He wasn't going to get that at UT and he knew the next 2 years were going to be a struggle. He knew his stock would never be higher at UT. So, he left because he saw the writing on the wall.

Thank goodness Hart wasn't stupid enough to sign off on a higher buyout. We would be paying him instead of someone else paying for him to leave. Transition is never easy, and it won't be easy for the next 2 years, but if Hart hires the right person, it'll be much better for our program in the long run. If Martin stays, we have 2 mediocre years and then a coaching change and maybe 2 more medicore years. Now we just have to weather the storm for a shorter period hopefully.

If Martin had embraced the fan base then maybe he would've seen that they would've embraced him back. It's a two way street. He was introverted and rarely marketed the program like it should've been marketed. However, that's not his personality. It just wasn't that good of a fit.

I appreciated his answers. I thought he spoke candidly. Frankly, I have no hard feelings toward him whatsoever. I wish him the best.

Now I just hope we make a solid hire.

He did what was the safest move for he and his family, hard to fault someone for that. Both parties can end up in a better spot as long as Hart makes a good hire, can be a win/win for both.

That was my initial thought as well, amd it may still end up that way if he is successful, but if he took similar money to move to one of the most expensive places in the country, then maybe it wasn't so safe.

$1.8 mil for next season in Knoxville and then $1 mil buyout if he were fired next year is probably similar money or maybe better than what he makes at vs what it costs to live there.

But if he is happier there, then there isn't really a price tag on that.

*Martin:

In other words he doesn't feel like he can win the SEC title.

Really? In other words, fans wanted him out, and he obliged. I admit that I did after the second A&M loss. It is ok to believe it. Don't try to twist what he said.

Your last sentence nailed it. But, I bought himself at least 3-4 more years at Cal. I know it is expensive out there, but that 3-4 more years of millions is much better than getting fired soon. I actually don't think we would have fired him after next year barring a disaster. But, the fans would have been restless again, and then we go back to your last sentence.

That’s a lot of forked tongue BS. For a guy who made his motto to be a “tougher breed”, he sure handled everything like a wimp. It’s not about the money? Right. I’m sure he’ll be driving a volkswagon and living in a 3 bedroom condo in Berkley? NOT!

He never warmed to the University or the area. If you’re going to coach, you have to recruit, and if you’re going to recruit successfully, you better appeal to the fans and the kids in the state of Tennessee especially(SEE BUTCH JONES!).

A 3 bedroom condo in Berkeley isn't cheap.

I don't understand why so many people wanted him gone, then now mad he left? WTF?

Who are all of these folks that are mad that he left? All I have seen are some that are glad he's gone because he's gone and others that glad that he's gone because they think he deserved better.

The comment about fans being mad that he is gone is just another attempt to create drama that doesn't exist.

Pro or Con there's little you can take from such interviews and be rational. People will translate it into whatever fits their agenda or take it for what it is...a politically correct response to anticipated questions.

I wish him well and am excited about seeing who the AD comes up with. GBO!!

I guess you got lost in all the threads.

I did not "want" him to leave, but I'm not disappointed that he left (a la Bruce Pearl and Lane Kiffin). Two things I took away:

- He realized that Tennessee fans were never a fan of his system and he acknowledged that. I agree, going from Pearl's full court press to a defense-oriented system was not as exciting.

- Even with the new contract offer, he could see next year was going to be tough and with a $1mil buyout he could easily have been fired after next season. He decided to leave on his own terms.

No disrespect to Coach Martin, I think he is a great person and was a good ambassador for UT. But I meet both of those criteria and I would not be a good candidate for coach at UT just because of that. Too often in sports when you realize the school and coach need to part ways, you have to pay a huge buyout. It seems in this case both parties agreed the fit was bad and both got out clean. Win-win? I think so.

Actually, at this point, people wanted him gone, and he obliged by leaving. Instead of wishing him luck and agreeing it was best for both sides, they want to continue the bashing as he heads out the door. But, that's what people do.

He's gone, it's done, best of luck to him. Everyone needs to move on. But....the one part of the interview that caught my attention, Cal's been in play since Feb. 11th? How has that gone unnoticed by the media and the UTAD?

Like his coaching or not (and I did have my doubts), he took the high road. It really does say alot about him. People will continue the bashing, but the man has never said one bad thing about the university.

I agree that it's time to get behind the next one.

That is a misprint. It was March. But, I didn't even realize that Montgomery had made his final decision to retire.

My guess is Cal knew it might be coming and made inquiries to several coaches (i.e. agents), and they did a great job keeping that quiet.

$2.8m if he's fired at UT next year

I'm guessing $1.8m/5 years (that's been verified) with probably that same 60% buyout. If he was fired next year he would get around $5m from Cal.

Okay, March 11th. That's still over a month. That's a long time to keep a secret. Hell, I doubt the NSA can keep a secret for a month.
