Dave Hart Blames Fans

Fans of college athletic program A = Fans of college athletic problem B

Fans are fans. UT is no different than 75% of the other college fanbases.

If a coach sucks b*lls for the majority of 2 seasons then they are probably gonna get some heat. I'm sure he did the best he knew to do. I don't doubt a bit that he felt like he just escaped hell on Earth though. We are the most self-entitled(for no rational reason), unreasonable , idiotic fan base in college sports. Bammer may be a close second...but we're undisputed champs for now.
Every fan base of a major successful program has it's share of morons and also expectations. There's nothing wrong with having expectations. That drives programs, businesses and individuals to excel. Show me a program without fan expectations and I'll show you a program that has either fan apathy and/or is mediocre.

Now threats and other forms of asshattery is inexcusable but is not proprietary to our fan base.

If Hart effs up hiring the next basketball coach he needs to get canned. It can't be that hard to find a good athletic director.

That's absolutely true, and accurate. But perhaps next time we'll wait until after the season to circulate a petition.

Good for all of those people. At the end of the day, these awful, no nothing fans continue to consistently deliver one of the best attendance records in all of college basketball. That money built this program a wonderful upgrade to TBA and a terrific practice facility.

I could understand if this was a situation where there wasn't baseline support for the program, but screw anyone who says that paying customers don't have a right to demand a better product when things aren't going well... which they weren't at the time of that petition.[/QUOTE]

"In one man's opinion, I don't think Cuonzo's decision was driven by dollars or was driven by necessarily number of years. I don't know. It was a tough year. I don't want to speak for Cuonzo. It was a tough year for Cuonzo and Roberta. There were a lot of distractions, you know what they were, you reported on them. Pretty tough for those young men and I talked to them and they have unsolicited, as the end of the year was progressing, made comments about how tough that was. It was a tough situation."

I agree. So do the players. So does the national media.

Basketball is a game of winners and losers. There is nothing complicated, difficult, or hard about that. Heaven forbid that UT fans, the same UT fans that made Tennessee a top 20 team in attendance for who knows how many years (and top 5 for all but one of Pearl's years) have expectations. Heaven forbid they want to see a winning product, or at the very least, feel confident in the man who's creating the product. Yeah, that's tough, having expectations. Yep. Tough.

I just have no sympathy for this entire line of thought. Martin could have survived much more easily had he made efforts to build a relationship with the fans -- the people who put their butts in the seats and buy the popcorn, as a former AD might say. But when you don't sell anyone on your vision, and then you don't win ... what do you expect to have happen? Is the NCAA once every three years really enough? For a team with as much backing, money, and (well, once upon a time) prestige at UT?

Sometimes I think the problem is we set our sights too damn low, rather than too damn high. Teams like Alabama, Kentucky, they say "we want to win" and they go hire Nick Saban or John Calipari. They put their money where their mouth is. UT just hand-wrings and acts like their sky is always falling. We can't possibly be great anymore. We aren't that kind of school anymore. Blah blah blah. Really wish we'd start talking the talk again. Forget rising stars. Get a winner. Bring in a winner. Butch knows the score, God bless him, and he acts like we're going somewhere. I don't see why we can't take that attitude for basketball. Meh.

Martin is behind the bad pr we are receiving. Coaches change jobs all the time, he wasn't fired, got a raise and extension but is muckraking for his own purposes and to hurt the University that took a chance on him. He could have left on good terms, but he chose the opposite road and frankly I think less of him for that. Everyone always talked about what a class guy Cuonzo was but by his behavior he is anything but in my book.

yeah, and if the seawolfs have another losing season we should kill the coaches family.

you sound like a f***ing clown. you realize you cheer for a team in knoxville tn? this is what the rest of the country thinks of hte south. jesus, never thought id see this particular kind of prejudice from a tennessean. you managed to offend me. you are impressively prejudice. congratulations you bigoted f***

What the hell are you talking about?

Martin saw the future here and there wasn't one, so he left while he could find another job.

Crap product? That crap product that beat UVA by 35 points? Put the biggest hurting on UK in UT history? Went to the Sweet 16? Took the number one team in the nation down to the wire? Took Wichita down to the wire?

Kenpom had has rated top ten most of the year. We lost a couple of heartbreakers. It happens.

You'd think people thought we were Indiana here or something. :mf_surrender:

you lost me at Indiana....great points though...

It's clear you people bashing Martin are pissed that he jilted for California. Honestly, if you take one look at this message board, I'd leave too. I enjoyed watching his team play. They played with a grit and tenacity, they weren't flashy (Pearl)...sure they lost a few games they shouldn't have, but for ****s sakes, quit acting like this team is UNC, Duke, Indiana, UCLA...it's not. I blame you idiot fans as well. You have a good thing and the first thing you want to do is get rid of it...well see those two fingers sticking straight up from Martin, that's for you.

Eff Cuonzo Martin. He's be fired in 3-4 seasons at California when UCLA,Stanford,Arizona State,Arizona and Oregon kick his arse. His schtick wont play in Berkeley either.

In thinking UT basketball fans just got out of Hell watching him coach and especially recruit.

It is really sad to see the HATE displayed here. I guess it should be more revealing than anything else. This so call fan base may regret the day CCM left. Be careful what you desire the most.

The only people that will regret ANYTHING are the folks in California. No one will miss him here. We don't care. Adios. Moving on.

Well if we truly scared him away - kudos to the fans!!

Let's be honest - this is a good fan base. We just had #2 spring game attendance after how many losing seasons?!?!?!

36k signing a petition is pretty badass too IMO - think about if we coulda done that to Dooley a year earlier!

That petition was embarrassing. Period.

The people who are glad Martin is gone are the same ones who really believed Pearl was coming back or believe Greg Marshall is going to be the next coach.

I think you need to go back and check your facts. With the raise, he would have been number 4 in the SEC and one of the top 30 in ALL OF COLLEGE BASKETBALL, not a bad offer!

I didn't have any facts with that post other than I was just reporting what the local News reported that the proposed contract would have been. I don't fact check everything that I hear on the news, it would take too much time. If that 9th paid fact is wrong, we can blame the folks on TheAnimal 99 for their evening report last night as that is my source.

If you don't like the product, don't pay for it. It's your choice to buy a ticket to the game or support the team.
A severe drop in attendance make a more powerful statement than a humiliating petition during the season. You talk as if your faux fandom gives you certain rights to tear a person down. You know more about the coaching aspects and problems than those actually working each day to correct it. Don't buy the ticket in the first place and make your statement that way. Don't petition and make a man have to eat a turd sandwich that you and your like conjured up because little ol'you is disappointed.

Who cares what the liberal national media thinks or writes.
The excessive hair dye continues to confuse Hart's thoughts.

I am so glad Gumby is gone--he did us a favor by leaving. He'll love the liberals at Cal and the high taxes.

Way to politicize college sports. :banghead2:
