Best of luck to JS. It's been awesome watching him grow from a huge but slightly awkward high schooler into the beast he was this year. He also represented our University well, as has just about every player on Martin's squads. His success in the big league(s) does nothing but help our cause.
Good Luck J. This is a good call IMO. While I agree he is iffy to make and NBA roster this go around, what would another year in college do to change that? It is not like Martin was going to move him to the three spot to work on his outside game. Would thirty double/doubles in a row next year make him better pro prospect? Doubtful. If his long term goal is to contribute on an NBA team, his best option may be to play in Europe, against bigger skilled players. Pushing around physically immature players in the SEC is not going to increase his skill set anymore, and may be a wasted year in that sense. Would love to have him back and would have agreed with that call as well had he chosen that. But I don't think this is a poor choice for the long term, nor do I think he believes he is guarantee draftee. There are too many experts agreeing on his current value, and Jarnell has handled himself way to well to think he is surrounded by poor advisors. I am sure he has thought of the options if undrafted, or D leagued. Good luck to him!
Stokes is not 6'8 either. I hope he does well, but am afraid he will see a lot of EUROPE in the next few hers.I don't necessarily agree with that, Charles Barkley's a Hall of Famer, and played in the NBA for 16 years as a power forward in spite of the fact he was only 6'4" (even though he was listed at 6'6"). He averaged 22 points and 11 boards and won a rebounding title...
Now, I'm not suggesting he's Charles Barkley, but it certainly wouldn't be unprecedented... Clearly, Jarnell's gotta work on things, not the least of which is his mid-range jumper---but in the right situation and the right coaching staff I think he can succeed at the next level...
