'15 NM QB Zach Gentry

I wonder if the commitment by Jennings will have any affect on Gentry and his possible commitment to the Vols!

Just have to wait and see. Should be able to tell more after his visits to okis st, bama, and maybe tx. Maybe he gives something away in the interviews after the visits. I had liked our chances a lot better when okie st took the QB earlier. Now that Jennings committed, it's hard to say.

So does: Eli Manning, Big Ben, Aaron Rodgers, Tebow, Manziel, Elway, Montana, Brady, Flacco, Kelly, Unitas and Aikman.

Ok 1st thing:

Tebow, Manziel, Montana, Rodgers, and Big Ben aren't really "slow"

2nd thing:

Stone footed pocket QB's might not be dead yet, but you can't really use guys who played in Unitas' era as examples. The athletes on the other side of the ball are on a different planet now.

And Eli Manning was hot garbage this year.

Are we really arguing over the athleticism of a pro style QB? Gentry isn't a statue in the pocket, but he's no Cam Newton running the ball either. His strength is arm talent, but he has the athleticism to make some plays with his feet. He's not gonna win a game with his legs, but he could probably pick up a few first downs a game. That's what our offense really needs. What's to argue about?

I really hope we get him...he has enough of EVERYTHING to become a star...I was on the side that meh'd Jennings as a QB prospect...I get an inkling that I was utterly wrong and that young man, with his athleticism and mental strength will be a big factor in our success. And in an ideal situation in being able to redshirt with basically two years to smooth rough edges and get the best out of the untapped or undeveloped portion of his skills...I could be talking about either prospect...hopefully I'll be talking both.

After looking at the strengths of all three QB's (Gentry, Jennings, & Gibson), I don't believe that the Jennings commitment will have much influence on Gentry's decision to commit to Tennessee. They have two different games and strengths that they bring to the team. But, I think the Jennings commitment will really influence Gibson because they play the same game. They bring the same strengths to the team. I'm not sure that we have much of a shot at Gibson now. I guess it depends on how much he likes Tennessee and if he wants competition to earn a spot. Gentry on the other hand still has a golden opportunity to play early at Tennessee. This QB recruitment is getting more and more interesting. Go get'm Butch!!!

Ferguson or Dobbs will start next year. Not a freshman. Any QB we take this year will likely redshirt.

You don't know that. A QB doesn't have to be a starter to burn a redshirt.

Gentry is good enough to come in and compete for a starting spot or back up position. Jennings will definitely redshirt. Gentry is far from a guaranteed redshirt.

Everyone wants the next Manning or Luck every year, it just does not happen. I think Gentry looks great on film. That being said he will be a freshman in the SEC. At that point Dobbs and Ferguson will be going into year 3 in college. Barring injury a freshman is not going to play over those 2. Anyone can compete for the starting spot but redshirts are used for a reason, especially in the big conferences. Is it possible he plays his freshman year, yes, but it is not likely.

I understand what you are saying. That said, this kid is 6'6" 230 and sitting in JUNIOR English right now. He has offers from 2 of the biggest heavyweight programs in college football. Our coaches absolutely love him, he is a tailor fit for our offense. Do not be surprised if he comes in and competes from the start. Especially true if he EE's. Not saying he will beat them out and start, but I wouldn't be surprised if he sees action as freshman.

My hope is that Ferguson is as good as advertised, and Dobbs would fill in behind him. No need to burn an entire year of his eligibility so he can play clean up. I think the kid will be great in a few years but size and great high school film does not always equate to a great college QB. If he starts or plays as a freshman then we have bigger problems. We have better pieces coming in all over the field under Butch will in turn make the QB's job easier and we can hopefully get away from throwing freshmen to the wolves before they are college ready.

As of this time we don't have a proven QB when he would step foot on campus. That is subject to change of course and I hope it does, or we're screwed. In a perfect world, both would red shirt. That said we started 3 QBs last season alone. One true frosh, and one redshirt frosh.

There's no benefit in burning a redshirt...unless there's significant playing time...and lots of benefit in letting one develop without losing a year of eligibility...do the math :eek:k:

So there is still no benefit in burning a redshirt if the said player can help the team win? The object of the game is winning. If he comes in and is the best QB on the roster day one, play him. If he is the second best QB and the number one goes down, you gotta play him.

Moot point, anyhow. What I was intially getting at is he is at a much higher chance of playing earlier than Jennings. And if so, there will be separation of a year between the two.

If Gentry, Gibson, or Jennings come in and are instantly the best QB on campus, things would not be good in the Jones home.

I agree. At some point these coaches have to take talent and develop it. If your always recruiting your "starters" for the following year, you won't be the HC very long.

I don't think we have to have a 4.5 40 QB. I would be happy with one that primarily passes but can also scramble and pick up a few yards too. Either way, I'm glad we have some great looking prospects interested in us.

That's my thought on it as well. If the QB can tuck it and get a 1st down on 3rd and 4 a couple times a game, I'll take it. Mobile enough to extend a play for 1 second is enough a lot of times. A QB that throws for 3000 and rushes for 300 in a season is fine by me.
