TN U has listed a bunch of highly ranked guys in their '14 class that will likely commit next wed. What's the attraction? Is it like ASU, with stories of female attention? TN hasn't had good seasons in many years, and can be counted on to get creamed pretty often. Why is it any good out of state players might want to go there?
It's one of the most storied programs in the SEC with one of the biggest stadiums in the country and they just got a new coach. Every program has down years.
This is true, but I sure as hell wouldn't want to play for them during their down years....which is right now. They haven't been good for a decent amount of time now. I noticed they are becoming like OSU with their "wait until next year" attitude. It's funny, really. We shall see if Butch Jones can do anything. I believe they have been down since 2004.
coach has been there since Lane Kiffin left, no? They are like the tx whorns, in that they keep getting highly ranked players, but fall woefully short in performance. I'm not complaining too much, though, since we have them in Norman next year. (their underachieving would be fine with me.)
Nah, Derek Dooley was there for a few years and stunk it up. Their new coach is in his first or second year I believe
Yep, can't develop the talent. I believe they lost a ton of Seniors coming into this year. We should blow them out.
new coach Butch now in his second year. The vols went 5-7 last year, with top drawer talent, and didn't even make it to the Belk Bowl, nor the Beef O'Brady bowl. His overall credentials are good, though.
Over the past 6 years (when these kids were in 6TH GRADE!), Tennessee is 33-41, averaged 2-3 wins in conference, and has been thru 4 coaches. While in high school, Tennessee is 21-28 while in high school with 2 coaches (right after Kiffin bailed). They haven't competed for a conference title since 2007 (lost to LSU), which is the last year they had double-digit wins. Tennessee has been a below-average program for more than half a decade. Aside from Tennessee being a beautiful place, I have no idea what recruits find attractive about the Tennesee football program.
A couple years ago some players robbed a dude at gunpoint and he didn't want to press charges because it might negatively affect the football program. Kids flock to these crappy SEC schools because the fans and media feed their egos and their pockets at a level most programs can't or won't.
Tennessee's a pretty big state and their love of Big Orange is in their DNA. I live in Nashville, and you should see sports bars during a Tenn. game. More ugly neon orange than anywhere else on the planet. Then there's the Jethros dawning the attire that put orange food coloring in their drinks so they're sure to shoot a biased tint of seed in their significant other's cooze, giving their offspring an early start to being a UT fan.
Kids around here want to play at UT. Same as our burnt orange ****s to the south of us. Unfortunately it doesn't always translate into success.
This is a great year for high school football talent in Tennessee, which helps with their ranking.
I looked at their committments for this year, and a significant # are in-state, including 2? five-star guys. Of course, there are quite a few out of state committments as well(inexplicable to me).
When they are good, that atmosphere with the yachts and all the other pregame stuff is very cool. We have a great program but our game day atmosphere is very average. Besides a couple of games a year our crowd is average at best.
For your average run of the mill game there is no better game day experience than around Neyland Stadium.
I guess, if you're into average run-of-the mill football, and one of the teams is wearing puke/baby poop orange
Don't be an idiot. I don't give a damn what color the people are wearing. If I just arrived from Mars on a random college football weekend not knowing if there were any top 10 match-ups being played, I'd go to the game in Knoxville. Its not about what is happening on the field. Its about the experience.
it's widely know that Martians don't know very much about excellence in football, and they prefer red, so you'll have to choose someone from another place, maybe Frnobulac, to make some kind of point. Would either a Martian or Frnobulacan know a good game day experience anyway? I rest my case.
Most the players Tennessee are bringing in, are from SEC country and were offered by many other SEC schools. The more SEC schools that offer a kid, the more stars he's given. That's also how the SEC has 8 of the top 10 in the ratings.
alot of them are from in state, so its easy for them to get the kids on campus for games over the last few years. also alot of their out of state commits are legacies, i know they have like 4 or 5 legacies committed. also they lost a lot, lost every starter on o and d line. so alot of it is juco as well who were promised immediate playing time.
One thing that has to do with it is the fans. I think Tennessee fans are probably the most dedicated fans in the country, and I have to give them props for that
