Recruiting Forum: Football Talk XI

I don't think you are in the minority. I just think we have more skill at rb, our qbs will keep it more on read option, and our after catch talent at wr is dramatically improved. So I am hopeful these things will hide some of the ol weakness

Key word being hopeful

Yep. Good sum up of how I feel as well. I thought I was in the minority because I was getting a sense there were a lot of posters in this thread that were "whistling past the graveyard" in regards to these spring practice reports on the OL. For example, I think Blair on the second team with a walkon at left tackle sounds troubling (although it's a reminder we are still rebuilding). I'm just calling a spade a spade.

there were about 100 teams in football last year that gave up fewer than that so hopefully we aren't that bad

Sacks Allowed | FBS Football Statistics - NCAA.com

In 2010 Cincy gave up 33 sacks, in 2011 they got it down to 22, and in 2012 it was 15. Butch was quoted as saying back when he first got here that after looking at the roster they knew they would be in trouble in year two. I think that was referring to the lines. One good thing going is that other than the new guys Lawson has had everyone else long enough to get them developed to some extent.

I also thought it was interesting they they went from collecting 26 sacks in 2010 to collecting 46 in 2011. They had at least 2 sacks in all but one game. They had 7 against NC state and 5 against W. Va. and 4 against Louisville. The one team out of 12 where they came up with goose eggs, Tennessee. It may be a taller order than some want to admit, replacing the 5 guys we just lost.

I'm optimistic. I think we'll play to the strengths of the guys we have on the field so we may be okay and I won't worry about Mahoney if we can sign Richmond, Jones, Edoga, and Stewart this year. Those guys should be ready by 2016 when the bulk of this years line is gone.

Still waiting to find out if the Blair situation is just a motivational tool, or because hes out of shape

I may get burned for this

But

I wouldn't be shocked if Jason Carr got moved to offensive tackle

Interesting. Carr to me will be an interesting one to watch regardless of where he plays. Sounds like he's a guy that struggles some with effort and technique at times (maybe similar to McCullers). But unlike McCullers CBJ and Stripling are going to have time to challenge him, coach him and toughen him up. I expect them to get through to him, and I'm betting he flips the switch at some point and becomes a really good player for us. Just might not be as soon as we hope.

Just got a wave from RA Dickey when we yelled Go Vols at the Rays Blue Jays game.

Father in law wearing UT Golf Shirt for those watching on tv. 3rd row 3rd base line.

Hubbs actually said the same thing recently. Crazy to think a DL that coveted would be moved to OL but I guess it happens.

It obvious that Butch is open to it with his "some of UT's best all-time OL came in as DL" statement. To me, he wouldn't have said that if he weren't at least thinking about a particular person or persons.

"Fundamental Tuesday" was the theme on Haslam Field as Tennessee conducted its ninth practice session of its 2014 spring camp.

Tennessee also welcomed back former coach and All-American Johnny Majors, who only recently was released from the hospital following heart surgery. The Vols also had a number of donors present on the practice field Tuesday as well.

The Vols, working for the first time since Saturday's scrimmage inside Neyland Stadium, were put through a gauntlet of various fundamental drills, from receivers and running backs working on staying low by having to dart under running chutes to defensive backs repeatedly drilled on stripping and recovering loose footballs.

Quarterbacks worked closely with wideouts and tight ends, with Butch Jones very involved in that segment of practice in the early going. Jones was coaching up tight ends and barking instructions.

Jones had earlier gotten his players' attention with some three-on-three work from the immediate outset. Jalen Hurd made a solid run during that segment while Jakob Johnson also notched a couple of stops.

After stretch, the Vols were ordered directly into some game-like goal-line situations. The defense had the upper hand early, with the highlight being Devaun Swafford jumping in front of the Nathan Peterman pass. Vol wideouts also had a couple of drops in those drills, and the defense was once flagged for holding.

In other offense-versus-defense battles, the Vols' defensive line was typically handled by its offensive counterparts. Jason Carr, back with a huge club on his left wrist, did have a couple of solid wins while Curt Maggitt showed some quick inside-burst on one play but also got stood up by Jacob Gilliam, who continued to work ahead of Dontavius Blair, on another play. Blair got absolutely destroyed around left end by Kendall Vickers, as d-line coach Steve Stripling and offensive line coach Don Mahoney watched their units compete.

Blair had earlier in practice won a one-on-one battle against Corey Vereen, and with several former Vols looking on as they prepare for Wednesday's pro day on campus, Jones chided Antonio 'Tiny' Richardson by announcing, "That's the first-ever pancake block by a number 74!"

Hurd continued to wear the protective brace on his left elbow, which extends from the middle of his forearm up past the elbow to his biceps. Marquez North was back at practice in a green jersey while Justin Coleman also worked in green --- the only two Vols in the non-contact shirts after Johnathon Johnson finally returned full-go.

Devrin Young, Josh Malone, Von Pearson and Malik Foreman continued to get extensive work in the return game as the Vols conducted more drills at the speciality spot that's got markedly better competition this spring than at any point last year.

Notes and observations from UT's Tuesday practice | Nooga.com

Injury update:
• Out: WR Ryan Jenkins, DT Trevarris Saulsberry, TE Brendan Downs, TE A.J. Branisel, S Brian Randolph, WR Drae Bowles, DT Jason Carr
• Limited: CB Justin Coleman, WR Marquez North
Other notes/observations:
• Jones started out practice by firing up the defense. Wearing the white practice uniforms, Jones told the defense it was because they are “soft as a marshmallow.”
• The team did a 3-on-3 drill where two offense linemen took on two D-linemen with a running back and a linebacker behind each respective side. Alden Hill had perhaps the best run of the drill when he squeezed through the pile and escaped for a clear victory. It was a physical drill, evidenced by the fact that two linemen – Allan Carson and Austin Sanders – both limped away from it.
• The defense had the upper hand in one-on-one battles between receivers and defensive backs. Devaun Swafford, who has seen reps as a first-team safety in spring practice, intercepted a pass intended for Alex Ellis and, though he stepped out of bounds, he still ran it the length of the field and celebrated a defensive touchdown. Emmanuel Moseley had great coverage on receiver Josh Smith on another rep. Jason Croom had the best rep for the offense, clearly beating safety LaDarrell McNeil to the inside for an easy touchdown.
• Freshman running back Jalen Hurd, already wearing a heavy brace on his shoulder, has added a large pad to his left elbow. He continues to practice at full speed, but clearly is being bothered by some minor issues.
