Recruiting Forum: Football Talk XI

Found this story interesting. I thought it was a bad painting myself, and evidently so did everyone else.

Derek Mason painting to be redone after complaints

Don't know what the problem is ... if it's concerning anything about Vandy it has to be or look bad.

We are not giving up 3+ sacks a game. This OL has been holding its own against the defense so far this spring. By fall I think they will be fine. Not as good at pass blocking as last year but a lot better than some chicken- littles think.

I'm not thinking we will give up three every game. But I am thinking more than one elite team on our schedule is going to completely torch us for 5 or so to get the overall total pretty high. We will see. I may have to flag my post for a bump next October/November in the "fire Mahoney" threads I have scheduled to read during that timeframe.

Ehh. Even if we are horrendous Mo shouldn't get fired. The lack of OL talent is pretty apparent, but I think our top 5-6 guys are solid. We need to make sure they don't get hurt.

I almost gave up on this after your 10 - 15%, 25%, 75%, and 25-30%.

No wonder coach Martin is having such a hard time - 140% of the people don't like him. That's a lot to overcome. :)

Ha Ha.
What's even more confusing is that each example is from a "separate" 100% group and not a combined group and was from a year or so of listening to people and their views on the staff and team. As I said earlier it's not from a poll. I'm sure from every thing that was mentioned that most people would have a view on each.

Definitely agree. Should probably clarify my opinions also incorporate my concerns about injuries and depth. We've been pretty lucky to avoid serious OL injuries the last few years.

Anyhow, just an opinion and certainly will be glad if I'm wrong. I also really do think talent improvements in other areas may offset the effects of bad OL play.

I didn't necessarily disagree with your statement. You're spot on about injuries we have been lucky recently. I have confidence in a few OL this year. Still unsure about LT, but I like Jackson, Crowder, Kerby, and Thomas (even though there might be growing pains), and Weismsn as our 6th OL

Received my VN text message a little while ago that Zo is officially staying at Tennessee. Good for him and our program, as it will hopefully provide some much needed stability so that recruiting will improve.

Just need to get better at recruiting.

PG Darius Thompson
SG Robert Hubbs/Armani Moore
SF Josh Richardson
PF AJ Davis/Jarnell Stokes if he stays?
C Ndiaye ?

I've often wondered if lack of OL injuries has any correlation to aggressive play (or lack thereof)? I'm just wondering.

I think we run a lot of 4 guard lineups next season.

Thompson or Austin at the 1
Hubbs at the 2
Richardson at the 3
Moore at the 4
Stokes at the 5

It will be interesting to see how Reese, AJ Davis, and Cofer develop. Rebounding was a huge strength this year. Could be a weakness next year.

I'm actually sold on Martin. He won me over in the final weeks of the season. I'm really pulling for him and the team.

"You're sold on Martin? You must enjoy mediocrity."

I became sold on Martin after watching the second half and OT of the Iowa game.

I kept reading that AJ Davis grew some since he arrived on campus and showed some real promise. I wondered why he didn't play more.

I think we will take a step back overall next year, but should still be good enough to win 10+ SEC games and make the tourney. I'm optimistic this year's group will buy in much quicker to Cuonzo's style than any previous group.

Wouldn't be surprised at all to see us get Rhett here. Stokes returns and we don't see any drop off in the front court with Stokes and Rhett.

To each their own, but I live in Chattanooga and just last night returned from San Franciso on a flight. I'd drive to Memphis and back every time over a cross country plan trip.

Well I would prefer to fly because I can actually do some work, you watch a movie, or take a nap. Can you do that while driving 5 hours? :p

My main concern with Martin is recruiting. The talent level on next years roster if Stokes leaves (and even if he doesn't) is scary. This is year 4 so most of the guys are Cuonzo's players. Unless we recruit better talent I don't know that we will ever get back to where we were this past year.

As a coach, I think he's good. I love the defense first mentality. Offense could be better at times but overall he's a good coach.

I think the DL will be the same (which is to say, bad) or better. More likely better, since they are faster and more athletic.

I think I'm in the minority, but I think the OL will be a train wreck. Better skill players and QB play will bail them out somewhat, but I think we will see a significant overall drop off and we will be recruiting OL hard core for 2015. I'm thinking 35+ sacks allowed and dozens of TFLs. Might get really ugly in games where we play elite DLs. Just is what it is. I expect "fire Mahoney" posts to be all the rage next fall.

I don't think you are in the minority. I just think we have more skill at rb, our qbs will keep it more on read option, and our after catch talent at wr is dramatically improved. So I am hopeful these things will hide some of the ol weakness

Key word being hopeful

I'm think (hope) his recruiting will prove to be better than he's given credit for. I think he recruits players to his system, rather than solely focusing on landing McDonalds All Americans that leave for the nba after a year. I think that approach can work in college basketball, as long as those guys are athletic, put in the work and consistently develop over time. Martin has already proven he can develop players. Stokes, McCrae and especially Josh Richardson have come a long way under him.

Plus, with a sweet sixteen under his belt, coupled with an extension and our facilities, he might land a few more big names going forward.

We will see. I think his defense-first, grind it out style of play will ultimately be what sets him apart. Once I saw it in full force for the last three weeks of this season, I was a believer. We really steamrolled folks and gave two championship caliber squads with significant talent advantages in Michigan and Florida a run for their money.
