BREAKING NEWS!!!Cuonzo Martin removes name from Marquette search

I think it infers the complete opposite IMO. Hiring an unproven assistant to coach a team that has made the tournanment something like 10 out of the last 12 years with a final four appearance seems unbelievable to me.

Marquette has a history of doing that. Buzz Williams was an assistant. Before him Tom Crean was an assistant.

He turned the Job down. Even after all the crap he took this past year he still turned it down.

CCM turned the job down? Do you have a link?

How do you know he wasn't told that Wojo was their pick and that he needed to go back and save face at Tenn?

As far as I'm concerned, coaches develop too once they move up. We expect players to grow, mature, and improve. I don't think coaches are exempt either.

I think he was a legit option but also knew they were going to interview others. I think he went back to Hart and he took care of Cuonzo at UT before Marquette ever made a real decision. Not sure Wojo being hired really confirms who was told what or when

ok, please let us know the raise and buyout numbers since you know this has happened.

I was unaware. Regardless, successful at it or not I think it comes with a great risk. Buzz leaving for VT and Marquette going so far down the line as to interview CCM and WOJO tells me all I need to know about the issues that must be going on up there.

The evidence tells me that they couldn't find any reasonable coach to take the job. Martin turned them down as well likely based on just the issues with the university and not the counter offer from UT and WOJO was one of their last option.

Again, this is all just pure speculation on my part.

The Sweet 16 run was awesome and with the talent on that team, that's what they should've done but that still doesn't change the fact there were a bunch of bad losses during the regular season.Yes, I know that teams lose games that they shouldn't but with the talent that wasreadily available to Martin, in reality he shouldn't have lost those games(UTEP,NC St.,A&M(twice)). That being said, I'm back to the wait and see mode with Martin.

They have done very well with hiring assistants

Looking back, I'd guess it was Wojo all along. They've only hired two head coaches since Al McGuire was hired in 1964 that weren't assistants. They've been good at getting them too. Hank Raymonds, Rick Majerus, O'Neill, Crean and Buzz. Unfortunately for them, even though they all have success at Marquette, they all end up taking another job in a relatively short period of time.

We have no idea what actually transpired. We can read the all tea leaves, and interpret all the signs in the world but the fact remains that Coach Martin will be our coach next year and for the foreseeable future.

@wesrucker247: BREAKING: Cuonzo Martin has taken his name out of consideration for the Marquette job: ***BREAKING: Cuonzo Martin news***

This is good news. Not great news but good news!!!

Likely scenerio: Martin leaves for Marquette. Hart opens the wallet to hire the Witicha State coach. Marshall says "Hell to the No" Hart now goes after a low level coach to hire for maybe a million a year. We end up with the coach from South Dakota State. we lose the current recruits and we have to re build the program again. Next season, we win 14 games!

This scenerio: Martin stays. Stokes is projected as a low 2nd rounder, so he stays another year. Rhet, the transfer from T.S.U. will transfer to U.T. He will fill the void created by Maymon's graduation. McRae is gone, but Richardson will step up and be that guy. Thompson will get better because he is now the starter. Next season, we will sneak in to the NCAA as a 14 or 15 seed and see how things play out in the tourney.

the lowest we should be is 12 seed.

Except we didn't go interview Butch until after Strong said no.

We don't know when CCM "withdrew" his name and when wojo was interviewed in comparison. We don't know the process they have. At least not to my current knowledge.

Withdrew name is not the same as turning down the job.

I can withdraw my name as well. I can't say I turned down the job because it wasn't offered to me.

This is semantic. I would argue that you can't withdraw from something you are not enrolled in.

We don't know what happened.
He could have been told they were going with Wojo, so he withdrew his name to save face. Or, they could have narrowed their search to CCM and Wojo, and CCM removed his name, so they quickly hired Wojo.
It's one of the two. Unless you're in CCM's camp or work at Marquette, I doubt you know.

We don't know when CCM "withdrew" his name and when wojo was interviewed in comparison.

"Wojo" was interviewed yesterday afternoon.

Martin withdrew his name from consideration thereafter.

How would Martin look if he hadn't withdrawn his name and "Wojo" got hired this morning?
