Recruiting Forum: Football Talk XI

fwiw, vol basketball signees are saying that martin and staff are telling them that they will be coaching them at tennessee next year, and not to pay attention to rumors that he is going to marquette. Also, that martin and hart would be meeting in due time to discuss his future.
I imagine that hart will need several days to read the message boards and to check and see how many of the 32,000 petition signers are actual donors or season ticket holders before he meets with ccm and makes a decision about his future. I can't see him making a decision before he does that.

none.

I agree. They make Tennessee a very unattractive place for prospective coaches.

Then those coaches should go to places where expectations are low, and the fan bases don't give a sh one way or the other. Match made in heaven

Kinda wish Zo wouldn't leave since that'll make Stokes' NBA decision real easy for him and I still want to see Stokes play football. That being said, can't really blame him for taking his ball and going home after some of the crap he took from people this season, including myself.

I think stokes is staying regardless. It would be a great learning process to get to learn from another coach and you better believe he will be recruited to stay. A great selling point is how stacked this draft is. Also butch is recruiting him to take a shot at football and is being told NFL scouts are already paying attention. More to lose by leaving early

IMO the attendance in February at home games was outstanding considering the performance of the team. A petition does not define the UT fanbase entirely. Last year they were one & done in the NIT and the players admitted their lack of interest. Not too many people forsaw the NCAA run this year. Losing Nichols to Memphis really hurt as well. The future with or without Martin is subject to great disagreement.

So I take it the lesson you've drawn from the last 8-10 years is that program instability and constant coaching turnover is the best path to sustainable success.

@Ben_Fred: A lot of unreturned calls today. UT says there is no update to give re: Cuonzo Martin, Marquette. Martin and #Vols assistants aren't talking.

Is it true that Martin had done a mediocre job prior to going to the sweet 16? Yes. Is our fanbase also batsh*t crazy? Yes. The crazies thought we would rehire Pearl and thought Martin would again not make it into the tourney. If Martin decides to leave I look it at as we are still TN and can still get a damn good coach.

Our fan base are bat**** crazy? Because a petition? While I don't agree with the petition we have an amazing fan base who have supported ut through times that others would pick a new team. We have the most passionate fans I know of. High expectations does not make us crazy.

I didn't sign that dumb petition, but I was not happy with being a mid level SEC program and the way we were playing. Pearl was never going to be hired and we will probably replace Martin with another mediocre coach if he leaves. I hope Martin stays so we can at least have some stability and momentum going into next season. Having to hire a new coach does have a potential downside. I do agree that we can still get a good coach if we open the wallet. Not sure if that will happen, though.

I do agree we have the most passionate fanbase, starting a petition to fire a coach in the middle of the season makes the fanbase look a little crazy.

Thing to keep in mind: Article says 'source' confirms Marquette's interest in Martin.

Source=Martin's agent

Two days later article reads: Martin agrees to extension and raise.

Petition aside, the vibe around here about a month ago was very different. It seems like there were very very few posters sticking up for zo and saying he should stay. In fact it seemed like most on the boards were in agreement we wanted/needed a new coach.

Zo had a team that most agreed should have finished a lot better than we did in the regular season. Expectations were high. Sweet 16 and nearly elite 8 was a good finish though.

I know for a fact that after the second A&M loss, virtually everyone on the basketball forum wanted him gone.

I'm still on the fence about him, but unless Hart has a great hire lined up, our program will suffer if he leaves. He's a good but not great coach, but there's a pretty decent chance we will end up with someone who isn't even "good".

Sorry Sto, I'm not with you on this one. 36000+ signatures wanting you fired and losing access to donor jets because of regular season results in bball when you're still on track to make the NCAAT makes a fanbase look ridiculous and unreasonable, not passionate. Football is a different animal. In bball you can have a disappointing 2/3 of a season and turn it on for the tourney and still overachieve for the season. Fans jumped the gun bigtime on this.

I agree with the above. The past couple of weeks I have seen so many "so glad we kept Cuonzo" posts on Facebook. This is great and all, but all of these same people had said nothing prior to post season play. It just irks me how many people just don't defend a coach until after he proves himself. I am friends with mostly UT fans who still think tyler bray is the quarterback, but damn if you wanna bump your chest for being right, make sure you haven't fair weathered.

I'm not really worried about the CCM situation. If he wants to be a Vol, I'd offer him a 250 grand a year raise and add 3 years to his deal. If he wants to look at other options I would not hesitate to take my 2-2.5 million a year and go shopping for another coach. Yes, the team did make a small run in the tourney they lucked out getting into. It's not like wins over iowa, umass, and mercer are anything to pound your chest over. It was a decent season IMO and nothing more. My offer would be 250 grand more or I am looking to replace the man.

just got a Chromebook.

I really like it. anyone considering one should do it. If you're like me, and can't afford apple, then this is it.
