Recruiting Forum: Football Talk XI

Well, Stokes is definitely gone then.

Hart better make a damn good hire, or UT will be lucky to make the NIT for the next 3-4 years.

I wasn't really a Martin supporter, but you have to acknowledge that he was a decent coach, and probably in the top 5 coaches in the SEC.

Given our history and the relative weakness of SEC basketball, I think there's a pretty high chance that we're facing a few years of mediocre to flat out bad basketball.

Hopefully Hart can get another Butch Jones.

Just seen where Marquette was tuned down by Shaka Smart and Wake Forest was after him too. If CCM takes the Marquette job Smart should be Hart's first choice for the job. I still think Smart would take the UT job over most everything else. Only a hunch, JMO.

What a bummer for Vol baseball. Had #2 USCe down 6-0 on the road and blew it. Ended on a walk off grand slam, lost 9-6.

Tough weekend for Vol sports. Baseball team is getting a reality check in league play. It's a cautionary tale for folks who think football is going to turn around quickly. Talent alone isn't enough. You have to learn how to win again, and to close out big games. Long season though and Vol baseball can learn from this.

Ugh. I feel like we're always a year or two away in every sport.

Men's and women's basketball this year may be the most success we will see in major sports for quite some time.

am I the only person who thinks Scottie Wilbekin looks like Prince?

(in before - "in before racist")

No my wife said a few days ago she thought that. I made a comment about both of them being ugly and weird looking and she said they didn't look that bad. She did say that Prince was about the size of one of Wilbekin's legs (he is a little shrimp).

Ben Howland is my first call, second call, third call, and first hand shake, if I'm Dave Hart.

Didn't UCLA fire him because he lost control of his team which caused several players to quit in the last few years he was there and which caused his wins to go down?

Dude...he went to three Final Fours in a row. Yes, please.

I don't recall the exact circumstances but it was something similar to a D'Rick Rogers/Dooley situation with Howland and Reeve Nelson that ultimately got him.

Well Dude...In Howland's last 4 years at UCLA he went 81-53, a .604 winning percentage. In Martin's 3 years at Tennessee his record was 63-41, a .606 winning percentage. Martin will not be fired this year because he's lost control of his team and he's not had multiple players quit because of it. Don't want Howland. JMO

Well then, let's just arrange the facts so that it fits your narrative, why don't we?

Ben Howland would be a significant upgrade if Martin were to leave. Regardless of the events that lead to his ultimate demise, If Martin decides to bolt for Marquette, Howland is my guy.

That's because this fanbase always blindly thinks next year is "the year," and that's not the case.

Most rational fans know how far we are.

Waiting for something like Duke or Carolina to open up most likely. He's young, plenty of time to be patient

Perhaps. I doubt those jobs open any time soon though. He can stay at VCU and not have to deal with the pressures/expectations of being a coach at UNC or Duke that have a great tradition. Eventually I think he'll take another job, but it might not be anytime soon.

did they make the drive or fly?

that drive isnt exactly 'fun'. one stops in texas, ok, arkansas, and the dreaded memphis. ugh.

Will people stop dogging Memphis, that's where I was born and raised, and now being away from home all the time just makes me realize how much I loved that place. Memphis isn't that bad.

This begs the question though, in spite of all the success he had to start his tenure at UCLA how bad must things have been (on and off the court) to get him fired with little chance to get it turned back around?

Im not saying Howland isn't the guy if Martin leaves, but there could be extenuating circumstances that cause AD's to look elsewhere.

Also, if Howland is "very interested" in the Marquette job and he is such an upgrade over Martin then why haven't they already signed him up? Just food for thought....:hi:
