TN HB-1547 on 'student religious freedom'

This bill will not "benefit" ( your word) a particular religion. This bill will "benefit" all religions

and potentially hurt education which is supposed to be the purpose of school. Want to talk about God then go to church or a private school

I'm complaining and I'm not an atheist. However it does not protect an atheist from being forced to sit through religious ideas or speeches during his classtime

It states that the atheist can refute his/her principles on said religion.

If billy is baptist and is basing his paper off a religious text, then Jessica can refute said text with her own principles and ideology.

Personally I think it might inspire good debate among them and they learn to respect one another's views better.

I read it. It doesn't say that. Says that it can be used in school work.

When I went to school, we pledged alligence to flag every morning and had a moment of silence. Schools have changed that already.

What's ironic to me is, the only ones complaining about this are atheist. And yet it protects them as well.

Speaking of atheists, let me share you a story. My wife went to two rural schools here in Tennessee, K-12. Although she always kept her atheism to herself, somehow the other students eventually found out (probably one of her "friends" told everyone). Her life afterwards was a living hell inside those schools, not to mention the community (i.e., cats/pets being poisoned and having students throw rocks at her after school). Even in the classroom, fellow students and even one or two teachers would harass her/disrespect her opinion (on any issue) due to her atheism.

Let's not be naive about who this bill is going to enable. In theory, it's everyone, but minority beliefs will get squashed by the majority, and it can only lead to bad things.

why encourage a religious debate in school? Unless it is a specific class on religion there is no place for it

and we all know how a single non-believer trying to debate a class full of Christians is going to be treated in HS. This offers him no protection

Great, let's bog down our already troubled education system with religious debates instead of teaching the students the material. That will really help.

Where the hell did some of you guys go to high school?

How many kids get beat up for being atheist?

I'll be honest, in high school, religion wasn't a big issue. I knew every one it graduated with and to this day I still don't know if they were religious of not, let alone what faith they may have followed.

we didn't talk about religion because the wise TN legislators hadn't seen fit to pass such a wonderful bill yet. We had to learn math and science all day instead

My kids go to school to learn, not be preached to or have to debate Billy on whether his superhero is more awesome than that of Mussasharrif's.

When your kids have to sit through an assembly listening to Sarah the Wiccan or Gary the Satanist or Jeff the atheist - please report back and tell us how you and your kids will "respect" that.

So this bill is now going to make them talk about it?

Let's poll every scientist and see if they think creationism is a viable subject to be discussed in science class.

(Hint: you won't like the results)

Let's poll every scientist to see if they have indisputable proof of macro evolution.

some can't help themselves and have been sold on the idea that Christians are some poor, mistreated bunch and must speak out. This bill was made for them so yes this will make them talk about it

can't wait until Fred Phelps III gets a hold of that mic first thing in the morning. Woohoo!

I have kids. I've been to many assemblys. They have done things I didn't and don't agree with. But I'm not going to keep my kids from seeing/hearing these things because I don't agree with it. I let my kids make their own decisions. God forbid we let our children think for themselves.

how many kids are given the choice to attend church on Sundays or stay home and play games? I grew up in TN and didn't know any who were allowed to stay home while mom and dad went to church

How about we let kids talk about their religious beliefs in an elective religion class instead of wasting science class's time with it?
