TN HB-1547 on 'student religious freedom'

no Christians don't want religion in school they only want Christianity in school. There is a difference

and I would think the ones crying about it would be the ones currently left out.

I am a Christian and I do not want any religion being taught in our public schools.

yet you seem to be in support of a bill that allows for the open discussion of it whether relevant to the subject matter or not. Do you think all religions will be given equal time?

this bill is a joke and TN legislators should be ashamed. No one is being persecuted, left out or harmed with the current setup. If you want to discuss God then you are free to do that on your own time. If you write a paper where the subject lends itself to a religious discussion or analogy then the teacher is going to understand. This is simply addressing a problem that doesn't exist in order to pander to their ridiculous voting base. They're buying votes with Bible verses

Are you outraged when a prayer is said prior to the beginning of a UT football game?

The last time I checked the University of Tennessee receives taxpayer money. God forbid if someone at a gathering of 80-100,000 people hears someone praying to God.

This is faux outrage. The bill does not allow religion to be taught. It allow students to express their religious beliefs if they choose to.

outraged? No, but I still think it's a pretty useless exercise. That's also a UTAD event so it's a little different and really not connected to this bill

the bill forces schools to allow equal time to religious activities. The bill puts the captain of the football team in a ”position of honor” no matter whether he sucks or can even spell his name. It's not about teaching it's about being forced to accommodate Christians in TN schools

I see nothing at all wrong with open discussions about religions. I personally think it is discriminating not to allow it.

Yes I believe all religions be allowed to be discussed.

Why does that scare you so much?

because the kids being turned out by public schools are stupid enough already. There is no need to water it down any more by spending time on religion. There is no use for it in education and there are plenty of hours in the day if that's what someone wants to discuss. Personally I'd prefer my kids be learning relevant subjects than having to listen to speeches talking about some higher power

Got it. You opposition is based on your hatred of Christianity. There are other religions in TN other than Christianity.

are you seriously going to pretend this wasn't put together to pander to TN Christians? Come on gramps, now who's trolling?

I have also never claimed to hate any religious group. That actually makes me much different than many Christians

If the bill was wrote for Muslims, all you crybabies would be all for it. Let it be a Christian, and you throw a fit.

Or if the bill was wrote for gays....

I'm going to assume the ones complaining on this don't go to UT football games. The prayer before the game must really set you on fire that such a act takes place at a university.

Some of y'all need to practice what preach.

I hope this was sarcasm

also the prayer before the game is not during class time and does not take away from learning any more than the band does.

just point out one person who would deny Christians yet allow any other religion to do the same in schools. Just one

All of you.

Hence my previous post.

Why the outrage over this bill PJ? What's wrong with kids being Christians and not being scared to say as much. Apparently you don't keep up with all the kids in the news for expressing their beliefs in God

because it's useless pandering. They address an issue that doesn't exist for the sole purpose of maintaining power with their uninformed voting base

kids can say what ever they want and this does nothing to address that. The issue is around the school sponsoring religious speech which should never happen

school is for education. It should not be treated as an extension of Sunday school

Macro Evolution should be tought in schools as it is, a theory, not a fact. The same goes for creation.

"Class, today we're going to learn about Creationism. God did it. Moving on...."

beyond that it becomes a religion class

Useless pandering?

gratify or indulge (an immoral or distasteful desire, need, or habit or a person with such a desire, etc.).

Tennessee by in large is a Christian state. Who are they pandering to?

Sunday school class will now be taught at school? Might do them some good. Maybe there won't be any school shootings or bullying.

Your hatred for Christianity is strong.

many definitions and you simply chose one to imply it was an insult. Also could mean to indulge weakness

the politicians create an issue that doesn't exist in order to maintain their seat. It gets passed and they can claim they are protecting your kids from the heathens at the gate. It gets vetoed and they can shout "onward Christian soldiers" and rally the troops to their cause. It's a win/win as long as they put their support behind it

Sunday school class will now be taught at school? Might do them some good. Maybe there won't be any school shootings or bullying.

it specifically mentions the captain of the football team. Do you think those guys he's the captain of never bully people? Yeah, this doesn't address that

I have no hatred for religion and understand the role it plays. What I do not like it taking up valuable school time from students who already struggle to grasp the basics and allow them to discuss religion. There is no place for it in public schools. If you feel the need you can send them to a religious private school of your choosing

On the flip side... " Class today we are going to learn about evolution. Your ancestors were monkeys. "

ridiculous and a perfect example of why class time needs to be used to present applicable subjects

It's all fun and games until a muslim kid asks for and gets the afternoon call to prayer on the PA system and whips out his magic carpet and lays it down in the middle of Algebra class.

The christian fundies would literally soil their collective shorts on the spot.
