Recruiting Forum: Football Talk XI

The Will (sometimes Mike though) is typically your best LB, that being said you play to his strengths. I guess it's really scheme and personnel dependent so I guess you're right I shouldn't have generalized.

For us personally, with JRM penciled in at Will and Curt at Sam, I definitely think JRM's strength is coverage/flying to the ball. I doubt you'll see him blitzing a whole lot especially with Maggitt and Johnson being much bigger to take on potential blockers.

All JMO of course, if I was an expert id be making tons of money somewhere lol

oh im no expert either - wasnt calling you out - just asking a question - always trying to improve my knowledge of the game - makes it more enjoyable to watch

Who do you think is currently the most overlooked player on the roster that will contribute the most this year? I personally think Vereen is going to shine with another pass rushing DE on the line with him

I'm not sure I'd consider Vereen an "overlooked" player. I'd think you'd have to go with someone that doesn't have any expectations on them.

Maybe Brendan Downs? It's now or never.

It may have been discusses and I have missed it in the threads so sorry in advance: Who does VN want for a QB commitment Gentry or Gibson and why?

Gentry of course...Gibson could catch some of his passes :)

Trevarris Saulsberry

and i am guilty of it too

certainly now or never - but i think he just won't make it into the mix - likely the FR and AJ will be the contributors there assuming AJ gets back from injury okay

I doubt we see Downs take significant snaps again. Saulsberry is a good one. He was having a great year until he got hurt

OFFENSE:
Jason Croom - So big. Could be such a nightmare for opposing defenses. I wonder if he realizes it. I think he could be a huge part of the offense and will. He's been kinda hesitant in the spotlight at times. But if he plays with poise and confidence he could emerge as the heart and soul of the wide receiver unit. Would love to see it.

DEFENSE:
LaDarrell McNeil - I don't know if he can hold off the young guys. But if he does it will be because he finally reached his potential. Which would be awesome to see and huge for this team. Veteran guy and a straight up head bustah.

Honerable mentions:
Alden Hill
Johnathan Johnson
Devrin Young
Riyahd Jones
Kenny Bynum
Jaylen Miller
Justin King

I think Jaylen Miller is going to become a pass rushing specialist and play a big role as a backup this fall.

His senior year stats in HS:

Recorded 62 tackles, including 10 for a loss, 27 sacks, nine pass breakups and three forced fumbles during his senior campaign

Pass rushing has been one of our biggest weaknesses for awhile now and I just think now that he's been in the program for a year, and red-shirted, he'll be ready to make an impact this fall and set himself up to be a starter down the road.

Fun fact I just noticed:

The Vols have the top 3 leading scorers in the NCAA tournament thus far. Stokes with 61, Richardson with 58, and McRae with 55. Stokes also leads the tournament in rebounds with 45 while second place has 27 and Maymon is in third with 26.

Found those stats to be quite interesting!

Makes sense as they have played 3 games when most other teams have played 2.

Justin Worley

Quintessential "overlooked" player on our roster...

I'm just not sure he he contributes much more than tutelage for the younger QB’s. I’m not sure it’s necessarily sad but, Justin Worley is sort of the 2012-2014 equivalent of Jerry Colquitt. He waited his turn, got injured, then had to watch the young guns come in and take snaps—biggest difference being Tyler Bray is no Peyton Manning (duh) and Worley actually got to play.

As far as “overlooked” goes, I’d go for either Josh Smith or Jacob Carter—Pearson, Malone, and North will obviously get the most looks because they’re the most talented but Smith seems to be a coach favorite. He may not be the most talented but he obviously does something right, whether it’s route running, downfield blocking, or providing a sure-handed receiver over the middle…I dunno. Carter is a RS Sr. this year. He might show up in garbage time but, he saw a lot of snaps last year…but it a WR corps that was one of, if not the, youngest in the country.

I think either would be exciting additions. But I'm much more intrigued by Gibson. I think he's probably a better actual quarterback than he gets credit for on this board. Gentry would be great to have moving forward, but I'm not convinced he's better at what he does than some of the QB's we currently have on the roster. While Gibson on the other hand, brings a whole different skill set to the table, thus immediately expanding the playbook drastically.

I really hope Josh Smith or Croom can step up. Von Malone and North will immediately upgrade our passing attack along with Wolf at TE. It would be gravy to have that 4th or 5th WR on the roster to provide quality depth.

My quarterback wish list is in this order:

1a. Gentry, 1b. Gibson, 1c. Lock, 1d. Murray, 1e. Science to get their s*** together an clone an 18yo Peyton Manning--only 1e. b/c of it being the least likely scenario.

Edit: forgot 6. Nunez.

3 games vs. 2 for everyone else.
