Recruiting Forum: Football Talk XI

I assumed the other poster was talking about popularity in the US - since he mentioned rise of soccer in this country

this is why I used US figures and used the MLS - the rest of this world certainly doesnt care about the MLS

they care as much about the NFL as the normal US sports fan cares about the Bundesliga - my guess is those #s might move a couple of percentage points but in 30 years when my son is my age the same thing will be true - Bundesliga very low in US in popularity, NFL huge - NFL very low internationally, Bundesliga huge

The Bundesliga just signed a tv deal with Fox and Bayern Munich is opening an office in NYC. Americans deff dig the Bundesliga, Premier League, La Liga, etc.

LOL at only going up because of catering to women.

Do a little research on fantasy football. The NFL spent tons of money to push fantasy football because it creates interest for the casual fan in numerous games per week. Vested interest in more teams than just your local = higher viewership. Which = bigger tv deals.

As for the sudden boost in soccer, that can be directly correlated to an increase in money spent on marketing, as well as the building of soccer specific stadiums which enhances the fan experience, also they are now willing to spend the money to bring in and keep talent in MLS.

Also, new cable packages make it much easier to view games from leagues around the world.

Cable prices are going up 40-60% a year. If people refuse to pay for cable, which is the trend, all they have left are butts in seats, which are less and less.

I keep reading this biggest reason for holding out is sports.

Not sure where I'm going with this; just throwing another log on the fire.

Why does the increase in soccer fandom have to coincide with a decrease in nfl fandom? I consider myself a hardcore Vols, Bears, Chelsea, Stl Cardinals, Stl Blues, Chicago Bulls, and MLS fan.

People have set budgets for their entertainment. Every dollar in the MLS pocket is out of the NFLs. You can only spend money once. Buying another sports jersey takes out of the NFL. They're direct competitors.

That's not even close to true man. I've started watching a lot more soccer, and I'm watching a lot more pro football because of fantasy leagues. There are plenty of people who start enjoying multiple sports and buy jerseys in all of them.

And even if it were true, this isn't 50 years ago where revenue comes from jerseys and tickets, almost all the money for every major sport comes from TV contracts and sponsorships. Eyeballs on televisions is all that matters. They could shut down jersey sales and the NFL wouldn't miss out on even 1% of their annual revenue.

Not for me. I have a mahogany desk with a 27" inch Mac screen and a view of the beach from my office. :hi:

Babyavi reference for the uninitiated.

My response to TV is in other posts. People are leaving cable companies to alternatives like netflix, huluplus, and so on. If people stopped buying cable, contractual obligations could not be met. It would result in massive bubble popping in sports. I think that will happen.

People make economic choices from one product to another all the time. It's reality.

that is all well and good and I would say there are many more viewing options now than in the past so it may have an audience now but people have talked about soccer rising in the US since Pele played for the Cosmos

it has just never caught on at a mainstream level - people play it as a little kid, then get over it and watch football

i am not anti-soccer, I actually played it in college so I would like for soccer to get more popular and it can, but my guess is it would gain at the expense of the other major sports and not football

jmo on that

also the NASL was a far superior league than the MLS and it ended up crashing and burning even after getting the best player in the world to play in it - so the jury is still very much out on the MLS - I am hopeful it can stay viable and potentially turn into a "real" league

that would lead people to buying the sunday ticket on their playstations - which I have done and would be more than happy to do in the future and many many others would be perfectly willing to do as well

Man you just keep coming with these crazy stats! I pay less for cable today than I did 5 years ago, and I get many more channels. $129 when I first moved to Nashville, $109 now. If they went up 50% per year, that means they would triple every 6 years. You really think with satellite competition they would have any customers if they took prices from $100/month to $300/month?

There's your massive competitor that can take the NFL down a notch. European soccer fans aren't tuning their TVs into the NFL as much anymore.

My cable bill goes up 10% every three months. I use to pay 70 last year, now I pay 90. Tons of people I know have this happen to them.

Wanna tell me how cable companies make profit? They don't by keeping the prices the same.

The viewership thing is done by a sampling company. It's biased!

200 bucks a year is too much for the dog and pony show.

NASL was in no way superior to MLS. NASL tried to be MLB (no salary cap) without the same financial stability. MLS is a far superior league with a strong central league office, which controls the player contracts, while growing the clubs and fanbase organically.
