According to reports from Gary Parrish of CBS Sports, Tennessee will officially name Donnie Tyndall as its new basketball coach sometime on Tuesday.

Tyndall, 43, has recruited in the SEC as an assistant at LSU, worked in the state of Tennessee as an assistant at Middle Tennessee, flourished in the region as the head coach at Morehead State, and won just as many games (56) the past two seasons at Southern Miss as White has won in the past two seasons at Louisiana Tech. Furthermore, Tyndall is a big personality who has helped increase season-ticket sales at USM. He’s twice inherited bad situations (not unlike the current situation at Tennessee), and both times turned things around quickly while winning at an unprecedented level relative to the program for which he was working.

Tennessee Director of Athletics Dave Hart had initially targeted Michael White from Louisiana Tech, but talks reportedly broke down over the amount of the buyout White would be entitled to if he were terminated.

According to Jeff Goodman, the deal was for $8 million over five years, but the two sides are still negotiating because Tyndall wants six years.

Goodman said the two “quickly reached a preliminary deal” after Hart reached out to Tyndall.

Tyndall made two NIT appearances in his two seasons at Southern Miss and twice made the NCAA Tournament during his six seasons at Morehead State. He was an assistant at MTSU from 2002-2006.
