Lady Vols claim 22nd No. 1 seed

Bi9xilfCYAArXJRThe Lady Vols will play in their 33rd NCAA Tournament starting Saturday, and they will do so as a No. 1 seed.

It’s the program’s 22nd overall No. 1 seed, but the first since 2011.

“I love it,” coach Holly Warlick said. “I think our kids are ready; our coaches are ready.”

Tennessee, who finished the season 27-5 and won the SEC Tournament, will face off against No. 16 seed Northwestern State at 4 p.m on Saturday at Thompson-Boling Arena.

Should they win, next up will be the winner of St. John’s and Southern California on Monday night at 9 p.m. The winner of that game will advance to the Sweet 16 in Louisville.

“Oh, it was huge,” junior Cierra Burdick said. It was an unbelievable feeling. It’s the first time I’ve seen that since I’ve been here. It’s awesome. It really is. We’ve worked so hard and we continue to battle every single day. I’m just glad that others saw all the work that we’ve put in—all the punches we’ve taken.”

“This is when you want your momentum, right here in the postseason,” Burdick continued. “This is what matters. I think we’ve put ourselves in a great opportunity—a great spot to do some great things. We’re hunting for Nashville. That’s what we want. We’re grinding for nine.”

Also in the Louisville region are: No. 2 seed Virginia, No. 3 seed Louisville, and No. 4 seed Maryland.
