Monte Kiffin
Monte Kiffin reported to be Tennessee's next defensive coordinator

Lane Kiffin is in Knoxville and reportedly meeting with the team this evening before being introduced as Tennessee’s new head coach tomorrow afternoon. With the drama of a new coach out of the way, the focus has now turned to the staff that Kiffin will assemble. VKB posted and is updating a comprehensive list of names being mentioned as potential candidates.

Several media outlets have reported that Monte Kiffin, Lane’s father, will leave his position with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to become the Vols defensive coordinator. Clearly, that’s a big deal and a +1 for Team Kiffin.

David Reaves, Kiffin’s brother-in-law, is expected to leave South Carolina and take a yet to be determined position on Tennessee’s offensive staff. Reaves is the Gamecocks quarterback coach, but more importantly, their recruiting coordinator.

Former Ole Miss head coach Ed Orgeron is another name that is getting a lot of play. I believe Coach O is a solid defensive coach and a strong recruiter but I seem to be in the minority that will be shocked if anything comes of this. With that said, Chris Low keeps mentioning his name which leads me to believe there is some substance to it.

As for recruiting at Tennessee, Coach Kiffin isn’t wasting any time. According to KNS reports, Kiffin has already contacted Tennessee commit/decommit Jarvis Giles. Interestingly, Giles also has ties to David Reaves who has been recruiting him at South Carolina. Kiffin is said to be still evaluating Tennessee running backs coach Stan Drayton and determining if there could be a place for him on Tennessee’s new staff. If you recall, Giles was being recruited to Tennessee by Drayon and the two are very close.

Speaking of current Tennessee assistant coaches, it was thought that Kiffin could possibly retain one or two of the current staff members. Granted, it was likely a long shot, but two names that had surfaced as possibilities were Latrell Scott and Dan Brooks. According to reports on VolNation, Kiffin has told the entire defensive staff that their services will no longer be needed. If true, that obviously eliminates Brooks.

Fulmer to Clemson? I never would have imagined that Clemson or Coach Fulmer would have any interest in one another. However, it doesn’t take much reading between the lines to figure out that something is going on. Fulmer’s quotes lead me to believe that there may be some mutual interest.

Old Spice Classic. Don’t forget to tune in this evening as Tennessee (basketball) will face Gonzaga in the Old Spice Classic championsip game in Orlando, FL. Tipoff is 8pm and ESPN2 will be televising the action. Be sure to tune in to VolNation Live immediately following the conclusion of the game.[/fusion_builder_column][/fusion_builder_row][/fusion_builder_container]

  1. Lane,
You are the worst excuse for a head coach I’ve ever seen! You kow that Crapton is the worst quarterback in the nation and you continue to play him. Please remove your head from your ass and start acting like a HEAD coach! The water boy could do a better job at quarterback. I’ve supported UT for 30 years and you are unbelievable(not in a good way). Thanks for leading us to another losing season!!!!!!
