Freshman forward Tariq Owens, who was recently cleared to transfer from Tennessee according to his father, is heading to St. John’s.

Owens is the first addition for new Red Storm coach Chris Mullin.

“When we found out that Chris Mullin was accepting the job, we were sincerely interested,” Owens’ father, Renard, told ESPN. “We considered visiting many schools, but my son ultimately decided to end it early, where he can concentrate on offseason workouts and getting more familiar with future teammates.”

Owens appeared in 28 games for Donnie Tyndall’s Vols last season, averaging 1.2 points and 1.1 rebounds in 7.6 minutes per game. His 13 blocked shots ranked third on the team.

  1. Hmmmm…from a proven Coach in Rick Barnes to an unproven Coach in Chris Mullins. Good luck with that.

  2. He would have played a ton this year for ut and a proven coach that has put muiltple players in the nba so… he transfers to a first year coach and to learn a new offense
