There is enough violent crime around Piedmont Park (Midtown) to make your toes curl if you care to read the police reports. Atlanta is a bit different than an outsider might expect.
Regardless, for those who are concerned, let me offer a bit of advice as a person who has lived in Midtown/Downtown since 2004: don't lurk around near public parks after everyone else has gone home and gone to bed. If you can manage to avoid that, you'll have a great time here. |

| There is so much going on in the city that weekend that I suggest staying close to downtown. Omni, Westin. If you stay up north near 400 you will be stuck in traffic for hours. |

| I've stayed near the Dome every time I've been to Atlanta and I've never had any issues.

If you can manage to avoid that, you'll have a great time here. | Exactly. I've stayed at the Westin, Marriott Marquis and Sheraton downtown and walked over to the Dome and never had a problem. There is usually a good police presence all up and down Andrew Young Int'l Blvd. That usually has a number of tourists there (Hard Rock is on there along with a Hooters) so police are usually patrolling.
For people taking MARTA, it has usually taken me about 1 hr from the Dunwoody station on game day. It's a Fri along with a ton of fans and other people heading downtown so don't cut it too close. If you don't want to change trains at Five Points, you can always get off at the Peachtree Station and it will put you right near Andrew Young Int'l Blvd and you can walk the rest of the way. Not too bad of a walk. There will be a lot of people on that route. |
