Need to change email accounts

I didn't find anything in the search (searched: email and change/ing email)

My old email address (from 2011) does not exist anymore. (old internet carrier)

I need to know if I put in a new email address, do I need to confirm from the OLD email address, or will it just automatically change?
I don't want to change the email if I'm going to get locked out.
