I posted this in another thread and thought I would post separately as this is fairly cool- if not completely geeky


BA Vols are up 2 spots to #3 nationally in team BA (.335) they were at .333 yesterday and #5 and remain #1 in SEC. Wofford is #1 at .356
OBP Vols are up 2 spots to #9 nationally (.437) the were .432 yesterday and #11. They also got past Aggies and are #2 in SEC (behind #3 UGA at .443) Wofford is #1 at 1471
SLG I neglected to put SLG yesterday. Vols are #1 nationally and are .669- Well ahead of #2 UGA at .632 WOW!
OPS. Vols are #1 at 1.106 as they moved ahead of UGA at 1.075
RUNS Vols move up to #2 from #4 in one day with 333. They are behind Wofford at 341 (BTW, the Terriers have played 2 fewer games- this may be worth a deep dive into their stats for a explanation.
HITS The Vols jump 6 spots to #5 with with 360 hits. UVA is #1 with 401
2B Vols remain at #2 with 91 behind UVA with 93
HR Vols are now tied at #1 with UGA at 87
RBI Vols leap to #1 with 309. 2 over #2 Texas Tech
BB Vols more to #42 from #45 with 172 total with 7 walks yesterday
SO Vols more up to 255 from 270 with 277
SB Vols fall to 247th with 21 bags. (I would not mind seeing Vols go the rest of the season with no stolen base attempts the rest of season)
CS Vols remain with 8 CS but are now #112 (I['m not sure how that worked?)

Team pitching:

ERA remain #19 with 3.97 from 3.90. Remain #5 in SEC
HITS up to #31 (from #36) with 234 hits allowed. Up one spot to #5 in SEC
RUNS up one spot to #14 (129) and remain 4th in SEC
WALKS leap up to #12 from #19 after a 1 walk afternoon on Sunday and up 1 spot to #2 in SEC.
K drop three spots to #51 with 290 but remain #11 in SEC
HBP Vols remain at #1 with 14 total (1 yesterday) . Indiana State is #2 at 17
BA Vols move up one spot to #24 with (.236). and remain #7 in SEC


Vols remain in the top tier of SEC in pitching in every state except SOs.

Good stuff. In SEC-only games, Vols sitting with ERA of 6.25, which sits 9th in conference. Something to keep an eye on moving forward.

Good reading. I wonder just how much the stats are affected by all the run-shortened games?

In the “total” column, it obviously produces lower numbers (total hits, total SO, etc), I suppose the good stats and the bad stats balance out, it just makes for a more difficult comparison than if all games were 9 innings.

Offensive stats show the Wildcats like to run. However, they are caught 28.5 % of the time. In MLB a "good" rate is 75% or higher. UK is at 71.4) Vols at fewer attempts are at 77.1%

A few of these numbers are worrisome based on the relatively low SEC schedule strength so far.
Both teams have already played Georgia. Kentucky pitched better again UGA than UT.
UK has played Missouri who's offense is terrible. Even after taking Florida series.

The Vols' SEC ERA needs improvement. To say the least. However, the competition gets better for the most part.

Yep. Pretty much the story in baseball. Pitching is where the rubber meets the road. If Vitello and Anderson can figure it out, we can really have some fun in the post season.

Missouri is terrible and effects the other teams' rankings that have already played (Arkansas, Kentucky, Vanderbilt and Florida) Even though they swept the Gators (someone sold their soul for that) the Tigers scored 2, 4 and 11 runs in each game. They outscored the Gators 17-14.


In SEC Play.

Mizzou is only batting .174 (last-14th)
Is 13th in AB with 385
Last in Runs (32 in 16 games) Mizzou had 11 runs in their last game!!!!
Last in Hits (67)
Last in Doubles (9) tied with Ole Miss
Last in HRs (3) SIX! behind #13 Vanderbilt
12th in BB (38) ahead of only Auburn and Alabama
Last in SOs (146) 11 behind #13 South Carolina

That's just plain terrible. Even considering they have played 4 good teams.

Pitching is somewhat better.
4th in team ERA (4.58)
4th in Hits Allowed (89)
6th in Runs Allowed (68)
5th in Earned Runs Allowed (54)
2nd in BB allowed (54)
Last (14th) in Strike Outs (89)

What will be helpful this season over 2022 is that 2 of the games - instead of 1; will be day games.
Kentucky will lost more of the "playing in a batcave" advantage.

That Friday night, Tennessee fans parking in the nearby lots, need to leave their headlights so we can get more ambient lights.
Perhaps Everyone in orange can bring a lantern?

After 4 weekends, the max innings -if not considering extra innings) is 108 innings. I believe everyone has played 2 home and 2 road series at this point. (now that I look- Ark has played 3 road series)
You often lose an inning in home game wins.
The Vols pitchers have only pitched 95 innnings.

UT lost 5 innings against Auburn (road loss + 2 run rules)
2 innings against UGA (Vols were run ruled and lost 8th and 9th innings)
4 innings against Ole Miss (2 run rule games)
2 innings against Alabama (2 road losses-9th innings)

This is 13 total innings..
Arkansas, Texas A&M, and Florida have pitched the maximum 108 innings.
Florida were "walked off" on the road three times at Missouri with one of the games going 11 innings.
A&M has no run rule games and played 3 extra innings against Auburn to get back to "par"
Arkansas has no run rule games. Played extra inning against LSU to cancel out their 1 road loss


Arkansas is a great pitching team but they have several stat advantages:
(1) They have played 9 home games vs. 3 road games
(2) They have pitched 108 total innings because of those road games and one extra inning game.
(3) Hogs have played the softest SEC schedule thus far as they have legitimately played the four worst teams in the league by record, Missouri (11th) LSU (12th) Ole Miss (13th), and Auburn (14th)
(4) Their offense has not been able to run rule anyone- even with all those home games.

3 of the next 4 Arkansas series are on the road. (SEC#10 Alabama, #6 South Carolina, and #2 Kentucky) Only one of those teams is top tier (UK) but even that team is not an offensive power. #8 Florida is their only home series in that span. Then they close in Fayetteville against #7 Miss State and on road at #3 Texas AM


Based on current standings; Arkansas will have played the five worst teams in the league by the end of next weekend. They will only play four teams in the upper half of the league by the end of the season

Arkansas is likely the best pitching team in the SEC. But their stats are aided by this schedule. By the end of the season, Arkansas will have not played Tennessee, Vanderbilt and Georgia.
By B Avg, those teams are 1-3-6. By Runs they are 2-5-6. By HR, they are 1-2-13, By SO taken, they are 3-5-7. Their rotating schedule has them playing the three worst eastern division offensive teams (SC, FL and MO) and avoiding 3/4 of the top eastern division teams.

Thanks for this thread, I am a stat junkie and I’m sure several on here are. I love watching how baseball stats accumulate over a season…..and the rhythm of a baseball season at any level. Good post and discussion!
