Ok.. today was finishing trimming and denailing the 1x stuff.. started at 8 this morning and almost got done. Some of these were a pain in the rear and took a lot of cleaning. A lot of guys don't do that but I want my stuff to stand out when it goes to my customers when compared to others guys boards. I did all most 600 board feet today.. ready to ship. Have about another 200 to go tomorrow and then start on the 2x6, 2x4, and 4x4's lol.

Gonna.post some.pics now..

There are type B cut nails. This type was manufactured between 1810 and 1870. Typa A's we're made between 1790 to 1810. The way to tell the difference is the burr on the tapered part of the nail. Type A's have 2 burrs on the same side. Type B's have the burrs on opposite sides. Just a fun fact lol.

These are before and after pics from where I brushed and cleaned the boards.

They are not perfect when I'm done.. 150 years of wear and tear is hard to fix but they look much cleaner.

These are what I call "money" boards. These are over 11 inches wide and vary between 14 and 16 feet. They are worth over $20 each. I have pulled around 100 of these off 1 building. This is the kind of material/boards you look for when you look at a job. They have zero insect damage, mainly because this is heart poplar and even termites don't like it. These boards are running over 1 1/4 thick. Really nice furniture grade stuff.

Green gold!! Lol.

This is what 150+ year old, old growth heart poplar looks like. Can't mistake that color.

This is the dirty underbelly of reclaiming wood no one wants you to see. Everyone thinks it's like Barnwood Builders, cracking one liners like Mark and having a crew to finish jobs in 4 days. Lol

I'm not there yet but I'm working on it. I thought about going after old cabins like Mark but to me the market is much more limited and competitive. There are fewer and fewer of those old hand hewn cabins every year, and one day they will be gone. The number out there is finite.

More barns, more opportunities and different ways to make money with them is the way I see it. Mark makes his money off reselling the and reassembling the cabins. I run across some every now and then. If I do I pass it along to him if I'm not interested. I get a lot of hand hewn stuff in barns. Beams and floor sills. Sometimes I find entire "pens" or rooms.

Is that a fiberglass or a cast iron tub?

Acrylic. Like taking a bath in a igloo cooler. Water stays hot forever.
The tub in this house was beyond repair. I have another house with the tub out being refinished. The refinishing cost more than the new tub.

Ok.. today was more denailing and trimming. Finished the 1 x stuff and started on the 2x.

I had already sold most of the large 2x stiff but had a few poplar 2x8 left. There are "money" boards also. The ones pictures are averaging over 20 feet long and I will sell them for $35 to $40.

I also pulled oak 1x stuff from the next building I'm gonna start in a couple of weeks. It has some really good quality oak in it also. The boards I pulled we're averaging 11 1/2 widths and I could see some that were wider. There is some termite damage in it but I won't know how bad it is until I get started.

How do you de-nail?
Hammer and a nail puller?
I'd think that damages the boards too much.

Actually that's pretty much it.
A couple of different hammers .. about 4 different pry bars of different sizes, nail punches, and a saw to trim the ends. I also have a drill I use to drill down next to the ones that break off. I then use needle nose to finish getting them out.

You try to minimize the damage but they gotta come out.

I keep trying to post pics but it's being difficult today. I'll try again later.

Still can't get pics to upload.. poor service area so that might be it.

Today was just loading the trailer and burning the bad stuff.

Oh.. I did make a quick $200 off of some gates the land owner asked me to get rid of. Lol. NEVER turn down an opportunity to make money. They were free to me.. took me maybe 30 minutes to load them up and sold them to another farmer down the road. Lol

Looks good man. Today was more of the same for me. Burned and denailed some wood. Confirmed delivery to my Florida customer for Monday so I gotta load my trailer and head south tomorrow.

Should be back working on the job Tuesday.

I have a bunch of pics.. just can't post them. Lol

Once I get on the road and get better service maybe they will post. Or maybe I need to update my phone. Something ain't right.

I even have pics of the next building I'm starting. The outside walls have 2 layers.. YES 2.. of oak boards. One vertical and one horizontal. All full sized. Never have seen that before. If the termites aren't too bad (and I don't think they are) I'll have a good opportunity to make a good bit on this next one also.

I'm still pulling wood out of the one on the ground. Probably pulled another 300 to 400 board feet today of good stuff while loading the trailer for the burn pit. It's crazy at the oint of wood that was in this building.

Do you do small buildings as well?
I've got a couple of smoke houses (10x10) and a small barn 20x30 ish that I might have to clear.
