It's certainly not to remove or prevent responsible people from defending themselves. Which, of course, are the vast, vast majority of gun owners.

Thursday night including multiple members of the same fraternity doesn't sound like a drug thing to me. I'd guess the guys were asshats to the guy who ended up being the shooter regarding a party at that house, and he ended up pulling a gun on them away from the house
