' Course CPF will pick someone he can CONTROL not a NEW thinker. | Cutcliffe was NOT fired. He led the Vols to a 12-0 record as OC in 1998 and took the head coaching job at Ole Miss prior to the National Championship game. He was 44-29 at Ole Miss (better win % than Tuberville when he was at Ole Miss) and his offense broke almost all Ole Miss records. The 10 wins that Ole Miss had in 2003, was the most at Ole Miss since 1971. They also tied for the West Division that season... the only time Ole Miss has been at the the top of the West Division. He was 3-1 in bowl games as Ole Miss coach.

| Those are all good points. I would have liked to have seen what CUT would have done with someone other than the 1st pick in the NFL darft. He was just OK with Ramaro Miller, and quite poor with the last bunch.
I give him his due, but Eli and Peyton don't come around too often. Of course, he did do a great job of preparing Eli to be as good as he could be.
Still, could he do it and score all of those points with a run of the mill QB? I am still not sure - or should I say to what extent. |

Cutcliffe has spent 8 or 9 of his last 15 years of coaching with the likes of the Mannings and Heath Shuler. I guess it's a chicken and egg argument though. Did the QBs make the coach or did the coach make the QBs?
I'd say he did a very good job of managing Tee Martin. It's not as if we were scoring 40 a game in 1998, but we played to Tee's strengths. |

In my own head, without trying to convinve anyone of anything, I just can't quite get settled with CUT. I think he is a good coach, though. But I just don't if he is a difference maker kind of coach, or just someone that will get his guys to perform at their average level.
Tee was definitely managed well. If memory serves, CUT had a butt chewing with him at halftime at GA. Since that point - for whatever reason - he seemed to play better.
It's also why I am astonished when people try and say Tee was the best QB we've had. Frankly, until now, I thought he was the worst we have had going back to Francis. Our offense moved the ball in spite of him, using his strengths where possible. But I thought he was a liability that whole season and severely restricted our offense at times (I know, that's picky seeing that won them all). |

| With due respect to the above posts, I'm not sure we have to worry about how Cut will fare with a "run of the mill" QB. #1: Crompton may very well be the "second coming of Manning" if scouting reports are accurate and he recovers quickly and fully. #2: Ainge, despite his performance this season, thus far, is also very talented. Getting beyond the proverbial "Sophomore Slump," a year of recovery, and some mental work might turn him into an all-american.
IMO, this is all but done. The Old Boys' Club in K-town will keep it in the family, and you know what? That's OK by me. . . .for now. Give CPF and his reinstated OC a shot, I'm assumming some overhauls at the position coaches at the end of the year, and who knows? We may be back in the hunt in a year or two. If they can't produce in three (by "produce," I'd say SEC championship), time for a new captain.

[b]Cutcliffe stated to reporters yesterday that he is not ruling out coming back to Tennessee as a coach.* I would say that Cutcliffe would not want to come back "officially" during this regular season.* He and Fulmer probably already have a handshake deal where Cutcliffe will be named OC immediately after the Kentucky game.* Cutcliffe would be OC for the bowl game.* Just my speculation. | Cutcliff wasnt fired if you knew anything about UT football youd know that

[b]Cut also said "he would like to be a HEAD coach somewhere. If not that I would consider UT." | Who says this move might not take care of both? Cut comes back as OC and steps right up to next in line for assumption of the throne in a few years.
Hmmmm. . . . makes you wonder.

[b]Cut also said "he would like to be a HEAD coach somewhere. If not that I would consider UT." We DO NOT need to be a second choice!. Hey Phil, go to the NFL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! | So, do you not go after a coach becasue you are afraid they will leave? The one thing that DC knows how to do is get the best possible play out of his players and that is what we need right now. If our players were playing up to their potential we would be 6-1, maybe even 7-0 right now. UT does not need an offensive scheme genius. We need good player development and DC can bring it. Also, CPF already passed on the NFL (remember Carolina wanted him after '98). I think Phil stays head coach until he dies or becomes AD. :D |

| Phil will ask Cut to come back for the rest of this season, only. This is good for all, as we get some short term help and Cut shows the coaching world he is up to the task physically for a new HC gig next year.
Mike Martz will need a job next year. He's got my vote! |

He left to take a well desrved shot at running his own program..Once again if a brilliant offensive mind like Charlie Weiss thinks enough of your talents to help with his offense, then you must be a damn good coach
