Bill Cowher: Going to Browns in NFL for 8-9 mil per year.
Butch Davis: No interest, staying at NC.
Jon Gruden: Having a playoff year, UT can't wait that long.
Mike Leach: After the beatdown tomorrow by OU his stock tanks.
Lane Kiffen: Next UT head football coach (also rumored on another board to bring Ed Orgeron with him as DC).

Brian Kelley, Broncho Mendenhall, Chris Peterson and all the other "lesser" names.........no chance Tennessee didn't fire a legend to hire someone that the average fan doen't know.

BOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

Kiffin has no place at UT... neither, for that matter, does Orgeron.

I'm not for or against him (Kiffin) but logic would tell you if Hamilton is going to get a "splash" coach then Kiffen is the only one that would raise eyebrows unless it someone not being mentioned like a Mike Shannahan or Brian Billick.

The average fan only knows Kiffen from the Al Davis incident. He can't exactly promote a stellar record as head coach. He is unproven.

It has been rumored that he wants to finish his career with his son. Go figure uh.

i just don't see it happening. sure, it'd be nice, but it wouldn't last too long, IMO

*edit* the 'wouldn't last too long' was made toward his dad coaching at UT

Hey,

Kiffin is young, he has an offensive mind and he can recruit. And, plus he knows the NFL. He might have been there for a short period of time (I think weird Al didn't give him a chance), but he knows the NFL.

I don't consider any of these other coaches "proven". The only one proven is Butch Davis.

I say bring on Kiffin!!!!

As for today, I would take Kiffin + Orgeron as DC + whoever Kiffin wants to bring in as OC over any other realistic candidate.

how is Brian Kelly a "lesser" name than Lane Kiffin. At least Kelly has coached (and done nothing but win) in college. if Cincy wins tomorrow and gets that BCS bowl bid, he will instantly sound like a major get across the country. I hope he's the guy we hire.

Tennessee has a number of coaches that are or should be interested. It will come down to how much money is offered. IMO, Kiffin is a fallback. I would guess that top choices are probably Davis, Gruden, Leach with Kiffin, Del Rio, Riley, Kelly, and others in the wings. If it were Kiffin, I would expect an announcement on the Monday following the Kentucky game. Since that does not line up with Hamilton's date, it tells me Kiffin is not #1 and he is waiting for a decision from someone else.

Kelly is proven. Leach is proven. Graham is proven, etc. Kiffin is unproven. Kiffin is the least experienced head coach on the board!

No experience + proven loser + unnamed OC = Hammy canned.

Wherever Kiffin goes, there's a very solid chance dad goes with. That is still on the table. Best position O gets in Kiffin lead UT program is Recruiting coordinator and position spot until Monte retires.

Also, I laugh at those that consider Kelly unproven, unknown and not a winner. You make yourselves look like fools.

70% of his wins (120 out of 150 or so) came while he was the head coach at Division 2 Grand Valley State.

Oh, yeah, he also failed to make the playoffs in 7 of his 13 years at Grand Valley State - you know, from the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Association.

He has coached somewhere in the neighborhood of 50 games - TOTAL - at the Division 1 level, and exactly TWO bowl games.

Had he lost a single game that he won during his 3 years at Central Michigan - he would have finished at .500 (18 - 16 for 3 years).

I don't care how "fiery" he is, or how much he's being talked up - it's not that other people saying that he's "second tier" that bothers me.....

It's that his record says it.

Loudly.

And clearly.

If Kelly is the best that we can do, we have problems.

Of course, this goes without mentioning the incident at Central Michigan when he allegedly made some, let's say racially insensitive remarks about how African-Americans were "raised in violence". He said this is a means of explaining why several players wouldn't snitch on another player....for murdering a man in a street fight, when he was stomped to death.

Why hasn't anyone noticed that BOTH the Michigan AND Michigan State jobs have come open in the very recent past - and neither even interviewed Kelly? If he's so awesome, I wonder why he wasn't even considered for either of those jobs?

Because he sucks.

Of course, this isn't nearly as bad as liking pirates and scoring touchdowns in bunches.

Michigan did interview Kelly. He was EXTREMELY high on their list.

Also, look at what he did at Central Michigan. He turned the program around and won the MAC. He took a bottom feeder and turned them into a contender. Those rebuilding years can hurt your overall record. What an idiotic post. Learn your facts before you start babbling.

Tressel just bombed when he came out of the DII didn't he? Ohio St kicks themselves every day for hiring him straight out of Youngstown St. What imbeciles they are.

26 season in the NFL should be long enough to get his retirement, no? We'll see how much he wants to rock the boat in Tampa with regard to his contract....

he wants nothing more than to coach with his son. If Al Davis wasn't senile, Monte would have been in Oakland.

I think that's probably true...but was he at the end of his contract when he could have gone to Oakland? He may just walk away from Tampa under contract and say to heck with them. It looks like the most they can do is just tie it up in court for a while, sue him personally, and then have a hard time showing damages. But, Tampa is notorious for doing whatever it takes to make a point of forcing people to honor their contracts, apparently...

Man I'm glad I ain't getting into any personal arguments regarding who Tennessee's next head football coach may be. When said coach is revealed, as they say, Let's get ready to Rumblllllleeeee......

The "facts" seem to be your stumbling block, not mine.

If he was so "EXTREMELY" high on Michigan's list....why wasn't he interviewed?
If that's the criteria you're using for "extremely" high on someone's list - then I am a darkhorse to be the next coach at UT, because they haven't interviewed me, either.

Wow! He turned around a team in the MAC?! That's pretty good. If you don't think about it. And you're drunk.

Speaking of "facts" what was his record at Central Michigan - you know, the big "turnaround" job that you claim he did while there?

I'll give you a minute to look it up.

That's right - 18 and 16.

Is that what you consider "turning a program around"? In the MAC no less?

Wow.

Can we announce him tomorrow, please?

You can say that you don't like the facts, or you can say that you like Kelly in spite of these facts, however, facts they are.

I forgive you for saying it was a bad post. I know that it upset you - and interfered with your wish to give the Big Orange keys to a Division 2 lackey.

I'd say we should hire Quarles from Maryville before Kelly.

At least he has more experience in running a bigger program at Maryville than Kelly does anywhere else he's been for 70% of his coaching career.
