He had one stellar year at Miami..that's it! We're talking the Hurricanes....not Miami of Ohio! They used to have their pick of any kid they wanted:

University of Miami

  • 1995 8-3; declined bowl invitation as part of NCAA probation
1996 9-3; went 6-1 in the Big East and won the Carquest Bowl
1997 5-6; first losing season at Miami since 1979
1998 9-3; Edgerrin James-led team beat N.C. State in bowl
1999 9-4; opened with win over Ohio State, but lost to ECU
2000 11-1; despite win over Florida State, excluded from BCS title game in favor of FSU Total 51-20
Cleveland Browns
  • 2001 7-9; Cleveland had won only five games the previous two seasons
2002 9-7; lost in the wild card round to Pittsburgh
2003 5-11; quarterback controversy stalled playoff momentum
2004 3-8; resigned with five games remaining Total 24-35
North Carolina

  • 2007 4-8
    2008 Currently 6-2
I'm sure he's a fine fella and he's got a fine resume as far as experience goes but when all that matters is wins and losses I don't see anything that makes me feel all warm and fuzzy about hiring the guy.

I'd love nothing more than for him to come here and prosper but as a head coach he has a record of 85-65.

If you say, "well we can't count the NFL because nobody dominates there," then ok in college he has a record of 61-30.

Again, I'm sure he's a great fella but those numbers don't really rock my world.

Yeah, the fact that Miami was coming off of probation and that he only recruited about 20 pro bowlers to UM despite that fact is nothing. He also built the team that Cokerhead won the NC with. He didn't blow up in the NFL but neither did Carroll or Saban and we'd take them in a heartbeat. UNC has the best team that they've had in a long time with 1.5 recruiting classes and he's starting to build a program there that can compete for the ACC year in and year out.

Butch would be in my "second-tier" list. He did leave Miami in great shape and has built the Tarheels into an ACC contender, which says a lot if you wear baby-blue.

He brought Miami back from probation and managed to amass insane talent at a time when FSU and Florida were both elite. If he had stayed at Miami, I think he would have won multiple national titles.

Sure, wins and losses are great - but you have to look at the situation of each job and take in the circumstances. Guy is an unbelievable recruiter and great coach.

Exactly. A ton of people are drooling over Muschamp. How's about bring in Butch and bring in Steele for DC? Both are amazing recruiters and great coaches. We could retain Scott and Drayton. At that point, we would be a recruiting juggernaut.

Yeah but CBD is a realistic possibility. I'm not counting pipe dreams. Sure, we could throw 6 mil a year and possibly pull Saban but that isn't very likely to happen.

I have seen you crack on Davis in another post. Who is your choice; or do you prefer to criticize?

How many coaches have gone into two programs that were in a shambles and built them both up from scratch?

(He's not quite there yet in UNC, obviously, but given the trajectory of his program and the state of the ACC, I'll be surprised if he's not playing in the Orange Bowl within the next couple of years.)

Incredible recruiter, simply decent game-day coach...sounds familiar.

I'm not saying BDavis wouldn't be an improvement over Fulmer - I just think we should take a chance on something different.

The sky's the limit. I really believe that Hamilton and the "money guys" will not be afraid to offer unprecedented sums to coaches considered "longshots."

I agree in principle; however, in practice, we probably aren't going to be able to go in and significantly outbid, say, an Oklahoma or a USC, and I don't think the adminsitration will risk the embarrassment of being turned down 3 times before finding their man.

I still think Davis is the most proven of anyone that is likely available.

Money won't be an issue, but just because we can throw out a ton doesn't mean that we will. Honestly, it may be cheaper to pull Saban than Davis. I think Davis has a similar buyout to CPF. I'm not sure what Saban's is.

Well, I don't know that calling an agent and seeing if $5-6 million will get you a meeting would necessarily cause embarassment. If anything, it would signify that we mean business and are looking to win games. . . .quickly.
