I went to the 2006 game and had a lot of fun but didn't feel like I really did much on the UT campus. We really pretty much stayed on the river side of the stadium which was cool but I was hoping for some more suggestions. I'm bringing my mom, or she is bringing me I guess(broke and in college) so I'm gonna try to avoid bars and stuff like that. Any other ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I'd say wear body armor and a paper bag on your head and have fun.

Just kidding...In all seriousness if it's just you two, I would walk up to Fort Sanders...be extra super totally nice, and find a house party/tailgate party. Introduce yourselves, and hang out.

:eek:k:

Dear Broke and in college,

Get a summer job so you're not broke. Take your mom to the Womens Hall of Fame in Knoxville. HatVol might be kind enough to escort you.

If you get a chance...World's Fair Park is nice. You can also take a trip to the top of the Sunshpere....it is free, and pretty cool.

YES!!!!!!! I love Bob e que. it's probably the best bbq I've ever had. I haven't met too many people that have heard of it.

Are they having the Orange Zone area this year...Usually free soft drinks, Back Yard Burgers/Hit dogs etc. It's cheap, fun, close to stadium and in middle of campus. Being from Memphis, I have had Bob e Que and it's good not great, but I live in the BBQ capital of the world. Make sure you go the the Vols hall of fame on campus...women's basketball hall of fame.

Overrated. You guys can't even decide on a style -- pulled or ribs? Wet or dry? There's a crappy-looking shack on the side of the road up near Johnson City that blows anything in Memphis away.

I can't say that I have many suggestions for someone coming to Knoxville for a football game who wants to avoid "bars and stuff like that." Get up early and go for a hike in the Smokies beforehand? Doubt you guys get to spend much time in the mountains down there.

When I say "avoid bars and stuff like that" I don't mean send me to a church I just mean I'm not going to be getting plastered with my mom so something else would probably be better.

If you want to stay in Knoxville, go downtown on Saturday or Saturday night and visit the "Old City". There are some good places to eat there and on Gay St. (yes, that is the name), and places to shop, if you or your mom likes that. Downtown is within walking distance of the stadium.

Score! Listen to some live music at Patrick Sullivan's or Barley's (and try the Greek pizza). Or, be a good son and take your mom to the Knoxville Museum of Art, right off Cumberland.

Thats what makes us the Capital of Que. You can get Wet from Corkey's, Dry from the Rendevous, Chopped from Topps, Pulled from Germantown Commisary, etc. All is excellent.

That shack is the Dixie Q and it in no way compares to Memphis Que...The serve their pork pulled and offer texas, north carolina, and different types of sauces that offer different flavors to cover your Que with...We actually cook ours with the flavor in it!

Alot of Folks eat at the copper pot before games...its ok don't forget to get to the stadium about 1 1/2 hours before game starts and see the VOL Walk, Its pretty damn cool!

flgator73,

Try parking in the garage behind the Downtown Grill and Brewery. The DGB is a great place to get some eats/drinks and they have several tvs. This is a great location because similar distances from the stadium will cost you $15 for parking and you will deal will hellish traffic after/before.

Downtown Grill & Brewery - Knoxville, TN 37902

After you're done w/ the brewery, trot down Union St, cutting thru Market Square. There are some really cool shops and several good places to eat/drink. Mom will like the stores.

A little further down Union towards campus and you'll see the Clinch St. crosswalk that will take you to the Worlds Fair Park - very pretty and then boom you're on the edge of campus and the strip on Cumberland.

You can venture up Cumberland to one of many bars/tailgates. BTW, there is a huge parking garage at 11th and Cumberland. If you go to the top, you can join our tailgate. If you take the elevator to level 5, there's a crosswalk that takes you thru the engineering bldgs directly to the section of the stadium where the visiting fans sit. Just follow the crowd.

Good luck and have fun.

Try a deli sandwich from Gus's Good Times Deli (815 Melrose Pl.) It's right on the edge of campus near Cumberland Ave.

If you are interested in seeing some of the UT traditions, the Vol Walk begins about 2 - 2 1/2 hours before kickoff. The team leaves from the Neyland-Thompson Sports Center, walks up Lake Loudoun Boulevard to Volunteer Boulevard and then
down Peyton Manning Pass to the stadium.

The UT Band marches to Neyland Stadium
about 1 1/2 to 1 3/4 hours before kickoff. They march down Volunteer Boulevard to Andy Holt Avenue to Stadium Drive, stopping along the way to “Salute the Hill,” then march into the stadium through Gate 21.

The Toyota Volunteer Village is located near both of these activities in the middle of campus at the Humanities Plaza. You can find food and drinks (no alcohol) for sale, music and activities, although many of the activities are geared toward children.

Have Fun and Go Vols!

I remember before the Florida game in '06, we were tailgating in the parking lot right below your garage, and a few people were passing a football between the road and the top floor of the garage, and somebody accidentally hit some poor woman with an errant throw. She was a nurse or something, wasn't even there for football, I felt kind of bad for her.

I was talking about Ridgewood. Their sliced pork makes Corky's and Rendevous taste like Buddy's fast food barbecue in Knoxville.

Your mom may want to hit Pigeon Forge/Gatlinburg for some shopping and you could go to splash country or hit the go-carts.

I personally wouldn't recommend Splash Country, the lines are super long there, and it's pretty expensive as I remember. There's 100's of better places to go in Pigeon Forge.

You cannot go wrong with the Old City. Usually real good live music there and good food as well.

Even though you are a gator I would be sure to get to the stadium early...Watch the Vol Walk and the band come in. Even though you most likely hate UT you can still appreciate the pagentry and tradition.
