A source close to the situation told the News Sentinel there is more than one reason for Crews’ suspension, but the reasons do not involve academics or an arrest or police citation.
Crews will continue to work out and weight train in the UT facilities, but he will not be allowed to do so with the team.
Crews, the source said, has been put on notice that his next misstep with the Vols will be his last.
“Duke is a very intelligent student-athlete but has made some poor decisions,” Pearl said in the release. “It is in his, as well as the team’s, best interest that he is suspended at this time.”
Crews’ suspension likely eliminates him from competing for an opening night starting job, leaving Ryan Childress, Wayne Chism and Tyler Smith in competition for the starting power forward and center positions.
Freshman center Brian Williams is working hard to find a spot in the rotation but is not ready to start.
Crews, who is from Hampton, Va., averaged 8.4 points and 5.1 rebounds. He led the Vols in blocked shots (32) and field goal percentage (.518) en route to All-SEC Freshmen honors.
The Vols begin play this fall with an exhibition game against California (Penn.) on Nov. 2 at Thompson-Boling Arena. Their season opener is Nov. 9 at home against Temple.

From what I've just found out within the past hour, way may have to consider playing without Crews.

Hanging around the wrong people here in Knoxville. It's being openly discussed on the street. Like the KNS quote above suggests, it's not about a police citation, or academics or an arrest.

I'm not really laughing but you act like you have some inside info from the streets but all you make is a general statement like he has been hanging around the wrong people. Anyone could say that and spin it 100 different ways. Meanwhile there are people like hat who really know what goes on.

That was my clear intent... to make a general statement because I'm hoping this will smooth itself out before the season because I want Crews to be able to contribute. As far as hat goes, he has his contacts... I don't claim to be an insider, nor did I claim to be a man of the street. But I was surprsied at the discussion that I heard going on this morning. Specific names, places, and actions were involved.

I'm smart enough to realize that most kids have a circle of people they hang around that they shouldn't be around. I realize this.

Like I said, have your laughs now. I'm not going to say anything else about it. Hopefully, he can get back on the team and contribute. But at some point this season (even if he does come back), I'm afraid something may pop up that gets him kicked off for good.

This will be all I say about this until something breaks in the media. Until then, have your fun/laughs...
