Eric Berry

Am I the only one that thinks Eric Berry should have started from day one? He is always around the ball! I know sometimes you should go with experience, but this is not one of them! IMO this is another coaching mistake, that takes a loss to get it corrected.

He got a lot of playing time....probably as much as he would have gotten even with the start. He was brought in for some CB I know (because I remember seeing him lined up against Jackson and once along the bottom of the screen)....but he ended up playing a lot of SS, no?

I think you are correct about SS. It seemed that everytime Cal Broke a long run, and we missed all those arm tackles, that he would come over and make the tackle.

Berry was involved in many plays which was good and bad...if our line had done their job, he wouldn't have had to be involved in so many tackles.
He was certainly a bright spot in the game.

If Berry is not starting from now on I will be seriously questioning the intelligence level of our coaches. Berry is the real deal Period!

He wasnt named a starter, but he played as much (maybe more) than anyone else did in the Secondary just like Fulmer said he would. They just didnt want the extra presure on him being labled a starter.

Well, he better be ready for some extra weight this week, because he will be a starter. If he continues showing he knows what he is doing out there, I look for him to be lined up in a few offensive packages maybe as early as Florida (though doubtful) but likely by Georgia.

It's taken you this long to start doing that?

He played on the first drive as a CB because we were in the mustang. After the 1st drive of the 2nd quarter, he played every down at safety.

Is McKenzie not ready to get some looks at safety? Are we more likely to see McKenzie at SS against a team with a better rushing attack , like USM? I want Berry to get as much time at CB as he can, because you would have to think that is his long-term home on the field. I will be very disappointed if our lack of pass coverage depth at SS keeps Gaines on the field and Berry away from CB.

fulmer doesn't like to start freshman, no matter how good they are. he's not a very good coach.

The reason McKenzie didn't get to play much is that the staff doesn't trust him yet. He was coming along until the last scrimmage and he was horribly out of position way too much.

From what I read in the paper, Fulmer said specificly they had to address the number of missed tackles at the safety position.

It's not going to surprise me if Berry and McKenzie aren't safeties next game and Hefney is playing CB.

Our best tackling DB unit at this point is probably Hef/Willingham at CBs(Johnson and Gaines were horrible tackling), McKenzie at SS(Parrish was horrible), and Berry at FS. This is all assuming McKenzie can at least tackle(since he can't cover), Berry can play every DB position(he's already had to play 2), Willingham can be consistent(he tackled well when he was in) and Hefney just had an off game(made 2nd most tackles, missed most tackles).
