2010 -- Number of Scholarships

Now that several players have left, one would think that we would have boatloads of scholarships to give and could pull an obscene class. However, I think there are some tricky little NCAA rules -- the details of which I am not intimately familiar with -- that may prevent us from doing so. And I'm actually not talking about the APR.

If anyone is well-versed in this stuff, I would be interested in knowing how it all breaks down and how many scholarships we will actually have.

The way it works is that you get 25 schollies for each recruiting season. Where it gets tricky is that you can back-count your early enrollees to the previous recruiting year if you did not fill the allotted 25 schollie openings that year. So if everyone from the '09 class qualifies that's 21 players. Now we had early enrollees in LB Nigel Mitchell Thornton, Toney Williams, Montori Hughes and Rae Sykes (I think that's all we had) which can be back-counted to the previous class. So now we have 8 openings for early enrollees. ( I don't think there is a limit on the number of players you can back-count.) That means we can sign 33 players in next year's class if we have 8 that enroll early.

I think this is right. I know the principles are -- not sure on the numbers though.

What's the point on a dumb limit if you have more scholarships available?

I believe they're trying to stop the massive rolling classes. Some coaches would intentionally sign 50 or 60 players one year knowing they would all be seniors the same year and they could make a run at the national title. I'm not sure why the NCAA cares but there was a previous poster in another thread that said this was the reason. It can make it very difficult to refill a roster. Often when schools come off probation it takes them several more years to fill out their scholarship spots b/c of this rule.

Well - if they sign and actually get 50 or 60 plays in on one class - then props to them - but good luck the next couple of years after that class graduates.

I believe our own Johnny Majors was the inspiration for the rule, from his time at Pitt where he would sign fifty or sixty guys each year while rebuilding the program to a national title.

I could be wrong on that, but I remember hearing it before.

Not trying to start anything, just asking. How can we sign 33? I thought we had 16 senoirs and as of now a total of 80 players. 85 is the cap right?

16 seniors = 16 scholly's
1 jr will leave = 1 scholly
5 under cap at moment = 5 scholly's
back sign a few = 3-4
sign and place a few = 30ish

I don't really think it's possibly to sign 50 or so quality players these days anyway with competition and freshmen wanting immediate playing time. It was different back then when Bear Bryant could bring in a second string every bit as good as the 1st string or whatever. I think the rule is past its time.
