'09 NC DB Devonte Holloman

Safety
Charlotte (NC) Independence
Ht: 6-foot-2
Wt: 205 lbs
Class: 2009 (High School)

Clemson recruit DeVonte Holloman, considered to be one of the top high school safeties in the country, has decommitted and says he wants to look at North Carolina.

Holloman, a 6-3, 215-pound senior, transferred from Charlotte Independence to Rock Hill (S.C.) South Pointe at the beginning of the season. He said he "was surprised but not surprised" when he heard about Clemson head coach Tommy Bowden being fired Monday morning.

"I wasn't expecting it at the beginning of the season," Holloman said. "Maybe at the end, but it's not a situation I want to go into -- with a whole new head coach and all the changes that will probably happen."

Holloman took an unofficial visit to Tennessee last month and plans to take official visits to South Carolina this week and LSU Oct. 25. He said he also wanted to visit North Carolina and was in the process of contacting the Tar Heels coaches who initially recruited him.

Holloman, a 4.0 student, said he still plans to graduate in December and enroll in his new school in January. He said that new school would come from one of the campuses he visits.

"I'm wide open again," Holloman said of his recruiting prospects.

He told Rivals that he wouldn't come here if we fired Fulmer and had a bunch of coaching changes. However, with NC in the mix, a Butch Davis hire and might come here.

Yeah, I'm not sure a kid who just decommitted because of coaching uncertainty is going to want to come to Tennessee right now.

Gilmore just committed with the Gamecocks. Now Holloman is strongly considering the Gamecocks. Wouldn't be suprised if they land him also considering the rumors surrounding Fulmer's job.

If Fulmer announces his retirement early, we can hire a guy before the end of the year and maybe get a head start on recruiting.

Holloman is ranked as the No. 7 safety in the country and is No. 83 in the Rivals100. LSU and South Carolina might be the teams to beat.

"I liked Tennessee but I keep hearing rumors about Phillip Fulmer as well and I don't want to go into a situation like I've been in with Clemson. I don't want to jump from one fire to another. I'm going to take my time with this and see what happens."

everything that I have read and heard about holloman suggests that he would have already commited to us if it were not for this unsettled coaching situation hanging over our heads.

I have a feeling that he wont commit until signing day or the Army AA game.

It freaking amazes me how Nunes was a die-hard vol, and then got his feelings hurt by the booing and decommitted.

Then you got a kid like Holloman who was just along for the ride (for the most part) with Stephan Gilmore at the UF game, and he leaves impressed. If Fulmer stays, I like our chances.
