Evaluation

SOPHOMORE EVAL: Mason has the tools to play on either side of the ball in college, lining up at quarterback, running back, wide receiver and defensive back throughout his first two years of his school ball. But on the next level, his solid frame, instincts and ball skills make him ideal in the secondary. Mason will have the ability to be a balanced safety, able to play the run and the pass effectively, though some technical aspects of his defensive game need polish.

Meanwhile, uncommitted defensive back Myles Mason is slated to be in town next weekend. While it was originally thought the Hewiit-Trussville native could make the trip this weekend, Mason will visit unofficially for the Georgia game on Sept. 30. Mason is a new name to watch for the Vols, who offered the 6-foot-2, 185-pound safety in January. Mason holds offers from Alabama, Auburn and Florida State — his public Top 3 — but the 3-star safety doesn’t currently have a spot at those schools, per sources. Led by linebackers coach Tommy Thigpen, the Vols are evaluating Mason similarly to a guy like Cam Jones, a versatile athlete who could end up as an outside linebacker.
