Vols Pick Up Corner

Vols Pick Up Corner

Devin Parrish By Jeffery Stewart

Posted Nov 27, 2006

Tennessee’s atypical football recruiting campaign kept to its uncommon course with the recent commitment of corner back prospect Devin Parrish, 6-0, 185, of Millford Academy Prep School in New Berlin, N.Y.

Parrish is the Vols 19th verbal commitment in the Class of 2007, and he’s the 11th prospect that potential projects as a DB or wide receiver. The others on that list includes Dennis Rogan, DeShaun Barnes, C.J. Fleming, Brent Vinson, Josh Hawkins, Art Evans, Alonzo Winfield, Daryl Vereen, Todd Campbell, Tyler Maples and Anthony Anderson.
The trio of Hawkins, Vereen and Rogan are listed as running backs by Scout.com, but they could be moved to defense or receiver, depending on who the Vols sign among several premiere targets remaining at tailback and wideout.

The younger cousin of former Miami Hurricane receiver Roscoe Parrish, who was drafted in the second round of April’s NFL Draft by the Buffalo Bills, Devin Parrish also played his high school ball in Dade County. As a junior at Hollywood Christian High School, he caught 13 passes for 370 yards and five touchdowns while recording 20 tackles on defense.

”He (Roscoe) has taught me a lot,” Devin said. “Roscoe mainly taught me to be prepared… to study the game and the players. He told me I need to understand how to read defenses and know what you are going up against.”

Devin did get some of Roscoe’s moves and he gets as much pleasure from taking a receiver out of the game as he does catching passes.

“As a receiver I have good hands and I make plays,” Parrish told Scout.com’s Jamie Newberg. “I have that shake ‘n bake and I am a playmaker. I am just like Roscoe only I am bigger. As a corner, I have a good understanding of what the receiver is going to do because I play the position. I can tell by just the way the line up and react.”

Parrish played his senior season at Gulliver Prepatory School before moving on to Millford Academy. He started his high school at Miami Southridge and transferred to three other schools in the next three years. But it’s his next move that Parrish is looking forward to the most.

“I will be out of here by December so I can play spring ball for whatever team," Parrish said. "My GPA is at a 2.3 I just need to get to a 2.5 and I am out of here. We are on a quarter system and I had four A's and a Blast quarter.”

The stop at Millford has paid dividends for Parrish who has gained 15 pounds, bulked up his GPA and settled nicely into the corner back role. He runs a 4.45 time in the 40 and is regarded as an excellent cover corner. He intercepted three passes in Millford’s first four games this season and is significantly stronger than he was in 2005. The extra strength and experience as well as his early arrival may allow Parrish to contribute early on The Hill.

How many times does Phil have to put him in "timeout" before his career is over?

per Brent Hubbs

Tennessee has not accepted his commitment. Not sure what's going on here.

I didn't realize this guy was related to Roscoe Parrish. If they have a few genes in common, then this guy is going to be a serious gamebreaker.

He says he will have the GPA not that he has it already. Probably the same reason they used on Hall.

you know, we took way to many hits in last years class, with grades, so that may be the motivation for this years caution

We've already taken 1 guy that won't qualify(possibly 2). But we are giving them love so that rerecruiting them won't be hard.

Something must be up with Parrish. Brent said he is not a Vol commit, nor will ever be one.

Scout also says Allen is deciding between UF and ND and have no idea UT made an in-home visit with Allen the other day. Scout is clueless when it comes to football recruiting. I would not put much stock in what they write.
