Linebacker Cameron Smith is doing what few players in his position do. Smith, a four-star linebacker rated among the best in the nation, is going out of his way to improve upon a conceived weakness. Smith traveled 450 miles south to join team Body by Tra in the Passing Down Regional 7-on-7 tournament. "Every athlete needs to get better at something," said Smith. "Hopefully colleges see that I want to be a three down linebacker. I don't want to come off the field, so I'm here to get better at what I think I can improve at."

Smith will participate in two other passing tournaments this spring. From a recruiting standpoint, he continues to be pursued by most of the Pac-12, although the newest school of interest courting him is from the SEC.

"Tennessee has been coming after me pretty hard," said Smith. "I've been talking to their staff and they have some good things to offer. It's exciting to get a look from the SEC. "Other than that, I'm talking a visit to Oregon pretty soon. Hopefully I'll also have The Opening and Rivals Five Star to look forward to."

"I want to narrow it to seven schools during the summer and then take my five official visits starting September," said Smith. "I already know USC and UCLA will be in my top two, so it's just of matter of sorting out my last three for official visits. "I'll go from there and then commit right after my last official visit."

Cameron Smith has not landed any new offers recently but two SEC programs continue to reach out to the four-star linebacker. The Granite Bay, Calif., standout said the Tennessee coaching staff is highly interested in him and they want him to visit Knoxville for summer camp.

"It's still kind of slow," Smith said. "I talked to the Tennessee coach and he said they were really interested and they want to see me at camp. I'd like to go visit during that time. "I was supposed to go to Alabama over spring break but we'll see how that plays out. I don't know if that's going to happen."

Other than going to The Opening and some other camps, Smith does not have any summer plans yet as the recruiting process continues.

USC is still considered the leader in his recruitment but Oregon, UCLA and others cannot be counted out - especially if some of those SEC offers come in. As for a decision, the Granite Bay standout said it should probably come during his senior season. "I'll probably do it mid-season," Smith said.
