HS Position: RB/FS
HT: 5-10
WT: 180

Football Recruiting - Nathan Cottrell - Player Profiles - ESPN

Nathan Cottrell - Hudl

Put this one in the category of one to watch next year. According to a poster on a another site, Cottrell is getting some interest from Texas, Nebraska & Missouri but has not heard from UT yet, where he'd love to go.

Cottrell was named to the All-KIL Track & Field team as a freshman after running a 10.98 100 M. He recorded the fastest 40 time last May at the Chicago Nike Football SPARQ Combine, which had about 900 participants. His shuttle time (4.52) was mediocre but he had an impressive vertical jump of 37.2".

He is putting up some remarkable numbers for West as a running back this year: 82 carries for 1,229 yards (15 ypc) and averaging 53 yards on his 14 TD runs. Also has 9 catches for 161 yards & 2 TDs, 6 KO returns for 310 yards & 2 TDs, and at least one punt return for a TD.

IMO, Cottrell projects as a cornerback in college. I haven't found his defensive stats this season but as a sophomore he had 74 tackles, 4 TFL & 2 interceptions.

I went to school with this kid. He and my younger brother were close. He recently ran an electronically timed sub 4.4. He is a high character guy as well. He comes from a great family. He and his family are huge UT fans. I'm not sure if he's a take, but this guy is a great athlete.

He could also be a Pigg type receiver and a return specialist. Can't teach that kind of speed - do you know how tall his dad and mom are? Is he a soph?

Yeah, Texas only has about 50 just like him in Houston alone

The facts say otherwise. Out of 1,400 participants at the Houston NFSC event this year, the top 40 time was a 4.45.

Only 5 guys (out of 14,000+) around the country at these events had a faster 40 time than Cottrell, and all of them are class of '14.

He looks solid. West has really come on in HSFB in the last few yrs. Scott Cummings is doing a great job there. Their only loss this yr is to Maryville. They have a great shot at the 5A state title. Hope they get it!

Neither of his parents are very tall. I'd say he's done growing. He is a junior. This kid is very fast. I think you're looking at a guy who is a bigger and slightly faster Devrin Young. Their body of work against East TN competition is somewhat simar. I don't recall Devrin's 40 time being sub 4.4. I heard Nathan had been timed under 4.4 recently. Also, this kid has a great work ethic from what I hear.

Thanks for the update, Nathan.
Hope to see you in orange here in a few years...

Ran 11 times for 135 yards last week vs. Lenoir City. Also took his only KO return 98 yards for a TD, so he's scored on 3 of the 7 kickoffs he's fielded this year.

Cottrell ran for 106 yards & 2 TDs on just 5 carries last night as West crushed Cleveland. During the playoffs he's rushed for 374 yards & 6 TDs on 28 carries (13.4 ypc) and caught 4 passes for 115 yards & 2 TDs.

He was running with a bad hammy. He didn't run in the state meet because of it. Definitely affected his shuttle time. He also benches over 300 and squats about 500. Duke has shown a lot of interest lately.

Cottrell rushed for 153 yards & 2 TDs, including a 69-yard TD run, on just 10 carries as West fell 28-27 to Henry County last night. He also returned a kickoff 81 yards.

Final junior stats: 131 carries for 1,922 yards (14.7 ypc) & 22 TDs, 16 catches for 289 yards & 4 TDs, 13 KO returns for 601 yards & 3 TDs, 1 punt return for a TD.

Another Knoxville kid who we probably shouldn't recruit. Not trying to be negative but we have take quite a few of them that just aren't SEC material.
