You look at guys like Darius Page, Darren Lake, and Vinnie Sunseri that Bama has recruited the past 3 years. None of them are highly rated, but they fit perfectly in the scheme of the 3-4. Darius is going to be a really good DE, Lake a really good NT, and Sunseri made some plays last year for Bama.
Nice post.

Dooley & staff going after a LB with a solid offer list and game film? Something strange is going on here.

Coaches miss on players just as much as they get them right. People need to drop this "coaches can do no wrong, you're an idiot for disagreeing" attitude because a lot of these people that are blowing smoke now will be the first to criticize if the kid doesn't pan out.
I'm not saying coaches never miss. I'm saying these kids that were offered and committed worked out in front of the coaches, multiple times in most cases, and earned the offer. What makes some think they can look at a rivals page or a few minutes of film and have a better scouting report on a kid than the staff?

I'm not saying we shouldn't all have opinions but do you really think you, me or anyone else posting on VN, knows more than Sal Sunseri when it comes to offering defensive players to play for UT?

I can understand complaining a few years from now if these kids flop but complaining now seems idiotic to me. JMO

I think that this class will be very simillar to the 2011 class when we took 8 db's with the only thing different is that we will be taking eight linebackers, so I don't look for us to recruit over any of our current linebacker committs, especially since we bombed last year in recruiting linebackers. Here is how I see this class shaking out.

Jack- Jason Hatcher / De'Vondre Camble
Sam- Corey Vereen / Zach Barnes
ILb- Dominic Zanca

Hybrid ( saftey- sam linebacker) Jaylen Reeves-Mayben

others to watch for

Jack- Lewis Neal( also watch us to keep recruiting Frank Herron)
Ilb-Yannick Ngakoue

longshot
ILB-Melvin Jones

plus we don't know what other linebackers will show up under the radar and get an offer

Same argument for Zach Barnes. He is playing DE in a 4-3 (I think), and we are recruiting him as a LB in a 3-4...big difference in skill set needed for those 2 positions.

Campbell isn't a JACK & Vereen isn't a SAM. Reeves-Maybin isn't a hybrid, he's either a S or WR.

Vereen is a Sam LB. He's not being recruited to play the Jack.

the way I understand it they already told vereen that is where he would be playing. I was under the impression that cambell played an undersized DE at hutchison and could grow into a jack and I swear the told maybin that he would be a hybrid role saftey or sam line backer. maybe you have heard differently.

Jones got his LSU offer and they really put the full court press on him to commit on the spot. Miles told him he would be the only mike they would offer this cycle. He resisted the pressure to commit and wants to take his visits. Still gotta believe he stays in state.

Pretty sure Vereen was quoted in a VQ article saying Sunseri wants him as a JACK LB. I'll find the quote when I get home.

Yeah I don't see LSU taking more than 1-2 LBs total unless there is chance they can play DE. If LSU gets some decent DL commits that takes priority.

The thing is, LSU is not waiting on in-state recruits anymore.

This is sort of huge. He had a great visit at the UA camp but was told by a pretty good LSU insider if LSU offered he would commit. Have to find out what happened.

Link? I could be wrong, but I haven't seen that confirmation anywhere.

I think he'll be used in a Curt Maggitt type of role. Play LB and on 3rd and long let him go get the QB. He's special in that area. But the Jack will be played by Jason Hatcher or Carl Lawson(I hope ).
