Here's what worries me about Steele:

October 15, 2011 @ 2-10 Maryland: 45 points allowed
October 22, 2011 vs 7-6 UNC: 38 points allowed
October 29, 2011 @ 8-5 Georgia Tech: 31 points allowed
November 5, 2011 BYE
November 12, 2011 vs 6-7 Wake Forest: 28 points allowed
November 19, 2011 @ 8-5 NC State: 37 points allowed
November 26, 2011 vs 11-2 USC: 34 points allowed

Anybody have a reason as to why this shouldn't be cause for serious concern?

Going on numbers alone, I'd say RS may have the edge in actual coaching/being a DC, but KS has a better recruiting track record.

Your point is valid though, KS has not proven recently that he can put an SEC-caliber defense on the field. RS proved it many years in a row in Miami, but all things are not necessarily equal. KS did not walk into a defensive powerhouse like RS did years ago in Miami.

In the four years before Kevin Steele got to Clemson, they gave up 28+ in regulation three times. In Steele's three years there, they have given up 28+ in regulation thirteen times.

Call me a negavol, but I just would not be excited about the Kevin Steele hire.

I know Steele is a great recruiter, but those are some high scores given up quite consistently.

In complete fairness, it only happened once in his second season at Clemson, and they underwent a change in offensive staff between years two and three. It's possible that just running a faster paced offense is what yielded some high point totals for opponents.

It could be like the Green Bay Packers defense. They have a really good defense, but since their offense scores so much and puts up so many points, other teams have to throw the ball and score to keep up. I'm not saying Clemson's offense or defense is comparable to the Packers, it's just a theory.

I agree to a point. If we were more well rounded and stocked I'd take a Steele type but we need someone good at both.

I mean that if we were dominant on offense or the run I could see taking a weak play caller on D. We need both recruits and play calling because we are still behind much of the league. Also if we were stacked on D already and could get by on talent and just needed someone to keep them coming in I could see going for a recruiter 1st. Again IMO we aren't and we'll need to out scheme the powerhouses of the league.
IMO Shannon is a better blend than Steele.

Regardless of who would be a better pick, I think we can all agree that either would be better than Wilcox in both recruiting and playcalling/developing. No diss on Wilcox, I just think these two are on another level than he is. Honestly I'm 50/50 on either guy, so it might come down to which of the two can bring a better group of coaches and recruits with him. Either way, if we manage to land either guy, I think we are upgrading, and I'll be happy.
