He talks an awful lot about Strength and agility and things that he doesn't really have a lot to do with. I would prefer if our OL coach actually talked more about teaching kids how to run block since that is Tennessee's bread and butter. Ofcourse coming from Florida, I don't guess he can teach that.

Went back and looked.

In 2001, the Gators averaged 122.4 yards per game rushing and 4.3 yards per carry. 1346 Total yards.

In 2001, Tennessee had 1980 Total Yards Rushing which was an average of 180 yards per game.

Then we got Jimmy Ray....

2002- 1978 Total Rushing Yards 152.2 per game.
2003- 1800 Total Rushing Yards 138.5 per game.
2004- 2418 Total Rushing Yards 186.0 per game.

Aside from last year, he has been horrible.

Looking a little further....

Before Jimmy Ray.....
2001- 4.0 yards per carry
2000- 4.3 yards per carry
1999- 4.4 yards per carry

Since Jimmy Ray.....
2002- 3.8 yards per carry
2003- 3.9 yards per carry
2004- 4.7 yards per carry

Florida WITH Jimmy Ray
2001- 4.4 yards per carry
2000- 3.8 yards per carry
1999- 4.3 yards per carry

Florida WITHOUT Jimmy Ray
2002- 3.8 yards per carry
2003- 4.2 yards per carry
2004- 4.5 yards per carry

If anything these numbers show that BOTH Tennessee and Florida were unconsistant with Jimmy, and that without him, there was gradual improvement at Florida, and at Tennessee, only last season where they ran the ball almost 50 more times than the season before was there much improvement.

I dunno if he is THE problem, but I think Tennessee can do better.

I don't know about your math, but this looks like gradual decline to me?

I'm not saying whether I think JRS is THE MAN or not. I just think this was a B I G stretch for evidence.

Without Him, Florida went from 3.8 to 4.2 to 4.5 yards per carry. That's gradual IMPROVEMENT.

You looked at the wrong set of numbers.

Then as far as Tennessee goes, with him, the Vols went from 3.8 to 3.9 to 4.7 which was gradual improvement each season, with last season's bigger jump being because they ran the ball 50 more times, which you somehow left out of the quote of me.

Don't forget, his first year at UT, Mike Barry was still Co-Offensive Line coach along with him.

OK, but let's go behind the numbers (at least for 2004) and then talk JRS.

Against five "weak sisters" the Vols rushed for:
UNLV..........272
La Tech......347
So. Car......246
Vandy........236
UK.............204

Total yards = 1305

avg yards per game = 261

Total rushes = 210

Avg. = 6.2 yards per carry

54% of their total 2004 rushing yards

Against eight "quality" opponents (debatable, but stay with me):
Florida....171
Aubrin....107
UGA.......127
Miss.......118
Bama.....63
ND.........58
Aubrin....228 (SECCG)
A&M.......241

UT rushed for 1113 total yards

Game average = 139 yards per game

Total rushes = 310

Avg. = 4.1 yards per carry

46% of the 2004 rushing total

Notice a pattern?

I'll grant that UT's run offense got better as the year wore on ... but ...

Eliminate the SECCG (Auburn decided to let us run and SHUT DOWN the pass - 8 of 20 for 69 yards) and the bowl game A&M was just hapless that day) and in six regular season games against "major" opponents the Vols averaged - you may have seen this on the nightly accident reports - 107 yards per game.

After eliminating the last two games:

Total rushes = 232

Total yards vs "big six" = 644 yards

Avg. = 2.7 yards per carry

Ray Trail, where are you???

Sorry to post right after myself ... but ...

So far in the 2005 campaign:

UAB.......138 (3.9 yds per carry)
UF...........66 (1.8)
LSU.........70 (2.1)
Miss.......172 (3.6)
UGA........48 (1.8)

Total rush yards = 494

Total attempts = 168

Average per game = 98.8 yards

Average 2.94 yards per carry

Somehow, I don't think that's what we call "Tennessee Football."

I love a guy that can talk stats.

Stevens just isn't what we are looking for at UT.

I really think Phil will make a move here in the postseason.

Enough, everyone put down your media guides and walk away. Enough of the numbers.
