[b]Charles Woodson. Big time players make Big Plays in Big Games. Everytime the spotlight was on Woodson in big games on Natl' TV, he shined. He picked off passes, shut down big time recievers, Caught passes on offense for TD's, and ran punts back for TD's...hell, he even had rushing TD's. He was the best player in the country by far in '97. Peyton is incredible, but in '97 when he had chances to prove himself, he lost. Woodson won a Natl' Championship, plain and simple, he deserved it. End of Discussion. |
You make it sound like Woodson was awesome at every position, when he was actually average at everything but defensive back.... he just played alot of positions. You also make it sound like he scored a multitude of touchdowns on punt returns, rushes, and receptions, etc.
Woodson's stats from 1997:
12 games played
5 rushes for 21 yards (4.2 avg), 1 TD and a long run of 33 yards. You do the match, he lost 12 yards on the other 4 carries.
12 receptions for 238 yards (10.8 avg) and 2 TDs.
0 kickoff returns
36 punts for 301 yards (8.4 avg) and 1 TD. Had a long of 78 yards against Ohio State to raise his average to 8.4 ypp.
On defense he had 47 tackles, 1 sack, 9 defensed passes, and 8 interceptions. He scored 0 defensive touchdowns.
The only spotlight on Woodson was during the Ohio State game. He accounted for only 4 Michigan TDs (24 points) in 1997.
You won't find any of his stats in the record books other than that he won the Heisman Trophy.
In contrast, Peyton Manning passed for 3819 yards on 287-of-477 passing. He passed for 36 TDs and rushed for 3 more TDs for a total of 234 Tennessee points.
That is almost 10 times the point production of Woodson. (9.75 times to be exact) I don't care how much of a force a player is on defense, Woodson was not even close in determining the overall outcome of each Michigan game as Manning was for Tennessee.
Let's see what the point per game average for each player was:
Peyton Manning 19.5 points-per-game
Charles Woodson 2.0 points-per-game
difference 17.5 points
