However I do agree that UT likley would have lost anyway. The non catch is what people focus on and over the years a lot of people seem to believe that was 4th down or the last play of the game. We should have had a chance to find out but like you said, Florida had just marched it down the field in less than 2 minutes. What people seem to forget about that game is all UT had to do was convert a 3rd and 1 on their last drive and they could have run out the clock, and they couldn't do it. That and they settled for way too many FGs that day.
Memphis yes technically we were robbed but come on....Memphis was HORRIBLE. They shouldn't have even been in the game. |

| I haven't attended a lot of games but I was at the '99 Arkansas game (it was a long drive home) and the '00 Florida game. The Arkansas one was frustrating b/c I don't think you could grasp how undisciplined that UT team was unless you were at the game. The UT safety (Grant I think) got beat deep multiple times when he was clearly baiting Stoerner trying to get the pick. You don't win championships playing that kind of football. |

| the common theme on these losses is the role chavis' D played, which is often overlooked.
sure the runner was down in the memphis state game, but if chavis had not allowed a long TD drive the blown call would not have mattered.
of course gaffney's catch was really a drop, but it was on 2nd down from the 2 yard line and the gayturds probably would have scored anyway, having moved the ball 88 yards into position after taking a punt at their own 10 yard line.
2001 against LSU was not stellar for our O, but we had enough points on the board at halftime to win and we only had to stop a backup QB and a backup RB.
david green would not have been poised for glory had the chavis D not allowed a quick march of 50 yards to get in scoring position.
a pedestrian arky QB had great passing days in 98 and 99 against the chavis D to make things scary, and horrible.
on the positive side i'll note that we would not have even been competitive in the 07 SECCG without a stellar D performance, but on balance this trip down memory lane just reminds me how ecstatic i am to have monte in knoxville.

| This one goes back a long way: a 14-6 loss in 1958 to the University of Chattanooga (now known as UTC). It was the ultimate shocker, considering that 2 yrs earlier the Vols, led by Johnny Majors, had an undefeated season.
In hindsight, however, I had to feel good for A. C. "Scrappy" Moore, who coached Chattanooga for 33 years. Back in the 1930s, Scrappy's teams played 6 games against UT under General Neyland before they even scored a touchdown. They were the creampuff team that Neyland always scheduled as a warm-up for Alabama. Scrappy was 0-17 against UT going into the 1958 game. He coached until 1967, but never again came close to beating the Vols. But at least he could say he beat them once. |

| My Dad always goes into his basement to hammer, saw, destroy things after a bad loss. When I was a little girl and still learning football, I could judge the magnitude of a loss by the finished product of his woodworking rage.
The very nice bookshelf in my guest room will always be a reminder of the 1990 Bama game. I've got a computer desk that was assembled after the 2005 Vandy game. I think last season he ran out of ideas by the time Wyoming came and went. |

| Memhis punt return The Memphis State punt returner's knee was not down, but his elbow was. He should have been ruled down at that point. I am not calling sour grapes on this one. Tennessee deserved the loss for allowing MSU to stay within 30. |

North Texas State for crying out loud! If memory serves, it was after that game that the moving van arrived at Bill Battle's house.. |
