that "in-waiting" is never a sure thing, just ask Kevin O'Neil

Sanders is the OC only in title. He does not call plays or run the offense.

No, it's not his title. Sanders is the QB coach, Joker Phillips is the OC.

Isn't Joker Phillips the OC at Kentucky?

EDIT: Thought so.

It's a sure thing you're being pursued as a head coaching candidate, which John Chavis most certainly is not.

One, if not all will be hired. It may not be the first to be hired, but the one with the best job/pay will be the answer.

I’m a bit late on this due to repeated losses of internet in my house:

Alright, here’s a list I came up with of some of the assistant coaches under Fulmer (the internet is bad for finding any non-major event sports info before the 2000s unfortunately.) Hope it helps settle some things in this argument. And please, add more assistant coaches if you can think of any

Phillip Fulmer: HC (1992-2008)….he did win a NC in his first 7 years as HC, w/ multiple years of top 10 finishes (many of them straight / back-to-back years of them)

David Cutcliffe: QB coach (1992-1993), OC / QB coach (1993-1998), (2006-2007) – coached both Mannings – both had incredible college and pro careers and peyton finished second in heisman voting senior year, coached Heath Shuler who had a great college career (finished 2nd in heisman voting senior year); went on to coach at Ole Miss & Duke, won Broyles Asst. Coach of the year in 1998, all starting QBs coached by him drafted, produced 3 top 10 QBs in draft (Heath Shuler, Peyton Manning, Eli Manning); still employed - now HC at Duke

John Chavis: Asst. (1992-1994), DC (1995-2008) – coached the following players into the NFL: Jason Allen, Parys Haralson, Omar Gaither, Jesse Mahelona, Kevin simon, Kevin Burnett, Rashad Baker, Shaun Ellis, Terry Fair, Deon Grant, Jabari Greer, Albert Haynesworth, John Henderson, Leonard Little, Eddie Moore, Darwin Walker, Al Wilson, Gibril Wilson, Aubrayo Franklin, Julian Battle, Jerod Mayo; at least 6 of those players were first round picks(...I'd have to go back and check more to see how many in all were 1st round and how many were first day) many more others drafted; almost immediately hired by LSU after being fired

Lovie Smith: DB coach (1993-1994); went on to coach Ohio St. DB in 1995; DC for St. Louis Rams (2001-2003); Chicago Bears HC (2005-present); went to Super Bowl; won NFL COY in 2005

Randy Sanders: WR Coach (1991-1993), RB coach (1993-1998), QB coach (1998), OC
& QB coach (1998-2005) – not a good OC, but was RB coach during some of UT’s most productive years at RB (Charlie Garner, James Stewart, Jay Graham, Jamal Lewis (only 2 years) and Shawn Bryson (only 2 years) – all drafted into NFL, top 3 rounds); as WR coach, coached Carl Pickens & Cory Fleming – both drafted; picked up by UK as QB coach

Trooper Taylor: RB coach (2004-2005), AHC (2005-2007), WR coach (2006-2007) – coached RB Cedric Houston (drafted), coached WRs Robert Meachem (most productive year at UT) (drafted); was voted in Rivals top 25 recruiters in 2005 and 2007; became co-OC at OK St. in 2008; now Auburn’s WR coach

Rodney Garner: TE coach (1996), TE & Offensive Tackles (1997) – still employed by UGA; great recruiter; known for “locking down the top talent in the state of GA” for whichever school employs him; both schools have experienced great success w/ him on staff

Mike Barry: O-line coach (1998-2002); went on to coach Oline in NFL

Again, the internet has little resources for most things from the 90s so anyone who can think of more past asst. coaches can add them in

As for assistants:

Fulmer Assistants 97-08
FULMER ASSISTANTS

JOHN CHAVIS
Consistent defensive coordinator who quickly won the most prestigious DC open position in college football after Fulmer's firing.

DAVID CUTCLIFFE
One of the best QB coaches in the country (unless the Mannings are both lying), proven by his return to reinvigorate UT's offense with solid, but unspectacular talent, in 2006 and 2007.

DOUG MARRONE
Spotted great young talent who went on to six year NFL rising career, coaching the offensive line at the Jets then the offensive coordinator with the Saints in their highly productive last three years, before landing the head coaching position at Syracuse.

MIKE BARRY
The offensive line coach legend for USC who leveraged his stint at UT into an NFL position again.

RANDY SANDERS
His offenses now appear to have over-performed given how few of the players from the 2000-2005 rosters developed in the next level. Had 2 average seasons (1999 & 2002), one terrible season (2005), and 4 above average seasons (2000, 2001, 2003, and 2004). Now the QB coach and recruiting coordinator for a reinvigorated Kentucky offense.

TROOPER TAYLOR
One of the best young recruiters in the game spotted and developed by Fulmer.

RODNEY GARNER
One of the best recruiters in the game spotted and developed by Fulmer.

LATRELL SCOTT
An excellent young recruiter principally responsible for many of UT's early leads into the 2009 recruiting class.

TT spotted a great recruiter in Gran and some good defensive coordinators in Chizik and Muschamp and an offensive coordinator in Petrino. Chizik was a complete disaster at Iowa State (and utterly hated there) and openly mocked as Auburn's choice by fans and alums alike. All in all, Fulmer has had more assistants in the same time frame take head coaching positions, more assistants be touted as elite recruiters, and more assistants praised for their offensive and defensive coaching capabilities than TT.
