Mostly the operative here.

Exactly, we usually beat the teams we could "out-talent," but over the years the talent slipped... and the losses mounted, and it got to the point where even crappy teams started beating us because of the mediocre talent and subpar coaching.

Thats the outlier on the "mostly!"

The silver lining was that loss started the wheels turning in earnest. It was an undeniable wake up call for the state of the program and its stagnant leadership.

I thought Fulmer/Sanders demonstrated you could have more talent then the team your playing, and consistently lose; i.e. Vols 2005.

Cool And 2004?

In 2004, Fulmer/Sanders demonstrated you could play in the SEC title game with two freshmen QBs and a transfer....

I think Lane has plenty to make a run, and I think the Vols probably will

Cool Defense

Didn't that defense also get four INTs against UCLA in that game?

Just wondering.

It was an ugly game all the way around, to be sure.

True. All in one half, too. Sure, they still lost, but how many other defensive units can say they had four interceptions in a half? Not too many, I bet!

Didn’t that defense also allow UCLA to drive down their throats and score touchdowns on their last 2 possessions in the 4th quarter; then give up the game losing field goal on the 1st possession of overtime.

Fortunately, we can say Chavis coached a good game because they did not give up a play greater than 37 yards.

Exactly.

Chavis' coaching abilitues are always brought up, yet all I remember all the 3rd and longs that have been given up over the years. The 3rd down in the AU game still drives me nuts.

You think people said "3rd and Chavis" on a 3rd and 58 for nothing?

Which is why I question the fact that he's such a great coach.

Thankfully, one of many pieces of the puzzle that led to a coaching change.

Clawson
Lost the UCLA game for us, by failing to stick to running the football.
We had a ridiculous yards per attempt runnng the ball, and Clawson continued to throw the ball. Crompton bounced so many passes that game, I thought we was Ernie Grunfeld

The Crompton/Foster fumble at the UCLA 6 on our opening possession of the 2nd half was a game changing moment.

With that said, we were simply outcoached all the way around.

I know, I know. Clawson got Fulmer fired, everything was fine at UT before Clawson stepped foot on campus, I know.
