| Turner Gill I have listened to a lot of names getting tossed around but I believe that a name that is not getting mentioned very much is going to be our new coach. Turner Gill fits the requirements that Hamilton has set forth. <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /> Head Coaching He has head coaching experience at Buffalo. They were horrible, the worse team in college football. From 1995 to 2004 (prior to Gill's arrival) they had only two seasons with more than 3 wins and had never beating a team with a .500 record or better. In Gill’s first season, they went 2-10 but a complete makeover of the offense allowed Buffalo to score the most points in a single season in school history. Oh, they even managed to be Kent State that year, who had a winning record and played in the Mac Championship. In his second season, they went 5-7 but 5-3 in the last eight games of the season. He was voted coach of the year. This season, he has them 6-4 leading their side of the conference. This is only 2-1/2 seasons removed from being the laughing stock of the MAC. National Recruiter Since his arrival at Buffalo, his recruiting classes are stock with mid level talent but have been from across the country. In each of his recruiting class, his recruits came from PA, AZ, TX, VA, MD, OH, FL, CA, MS, TN, and many more. I know that they were mid level players at best but you put the Tennessee name and resources at his disposal and watch the talent level increase fast. His has pipelines established, he just needs to have the big name school and resources to pull the four and five stars out. Bloodlines He was an all American for Tom Osborne and later coached under him. He learned how a championship team is built and sustained. 3 championships as an assistant and as the OB coach, he tutored Erich Crouch and Scott Frost, I believe one of them won the Heisman. NFL Experience Gill spent two years on the Green Bay Packers coaching staff (assistant WR coach) and in the front office helping with player development. Energy and Discipline He is young and has the name and the resume for recruits, player, and fans to get behind. He is also coming from a small school who regularly schedules games against BCS teams. That tells me that he is not intimidated by anyone. He is also a disciplinary that is just 2-1/2 season, has not rebuilt but built the University of Buffalo’s football team. |
