I really like Gruden, but if we don't get him, I think along with most, we get Lane Kiffin.
I could live with TN hiring Lane Kiffin. They can probably get him for around 2.5 mill. I think he was only making around 2 mill in Oakland.

For Gruden to be offered, Gruden would have to be interviewed and that would have to take place when the NFL season is over.

IMO Hamilton wont be willing to wait that long to name a new HC. Not with national signing day around Feb 6 and the Super Bowl Feb 1. There would be no staff in place to recruit this year.

Why would Hamilton have to wait until the NFL season is over to interview Gruden?

I don't believe he would. This is not an NFL to NFL move nor a CFB to CFB. The NFL could keep him from jumping to another NFL team but they have no say over CFB.

I believe it's also been reported that there's no buyout for a CFB team either.

Doesn't it depend on Gruden's contract?

Hamilton said that he wouldn't rush and hire the wrong guy, just to hire someone. I think if he had the knowledge he could get someone like Gruden, he would be more than willing to wait, even if it meant sacrificing one recruiting class.

IMO Hamilton should keep Lattrell Scott around. From what I hear, he is one of the biggest reasons TN has had such success in recruiting so far this year.

ESPN - Leach, Kelly, Kiffin, Brewster all on Vols' list - SEC

This article, which has been previously posted on this board, mentions Hamilton would have to wait until their season ends in January to contact an NFL coach:

Quote:
He acknowledged that it would be difficult to hire an NFL coach with the way coaches' contracts are structured in the NFL and the fact that their seasons run so long.
"It makes it harder to hire an NFL assistant or head coach back into the college level," Hamilton said. "I don't think it precludes it, but it's certainly another hurdle you have to get through."

I read somewhere (this thread?) about Gruden's interview yesterday or today where he didn't deny an interest. My question is this...does anyone know where he was for that interview? Just trying to figure out if he's actually been around.

CNNSI.com - Inside Game - Don Banks - Inside the NFL - SI's Banks: The time is now for Marvin Lewis - Saturday January 13, 2001 08:00 PM

Another article, stating you can't contact an NFL assistant until their season ends.

I can see what you're saying but that only says that it would be more difficult. It doesn't spell out that they cannot talk to him.

Of course just because I want this to be true won't make it so!

Has it been confirmed that Gruden and his wife will be in town for Homecoming tomorrow?

Where, in the portion of the article you posted, does Hamilton say he'd have to wait until the NFL season is over to contact a prospective coach?

So we all need to root for the Bucs to tank this year, making Gruden want to leave?
