| One can dream... Look at the similarities...

A Champion and a new era
After 3 seasons with high expectations, the Vols faced a new task. Tennessee was expected to have a slight fall off after their conference championship the previous season. They lost QB Peyton Manning, WR's Marcus Nash and Andy McCullough, and LB Leonard Little to the NFL. Manning was the first pick overall in the 1998 NFL Draft. They were also coming off of a 42-17 loss to Nebraska in the Orange Bowl, and were in the midst of a 5 game losing streak to their rivals the Florida Gators.
However, the 1998 Tennessee Volunteers football team would prove to exceed all expectation. Led by new quarterback Tee Martin and All American linebacker Al Wilson, the Vols captured another National title.

| The 1998 team had a fairly awesome OL that could run block coupled with a mobile QB who could make things happen with his legs. |

| Sounds like it would apply better to LSU.
SEC championship.
Loss of the Quarterback.
3 years of high expectations.
I certainly don't recall the last three years having high expectations. More like high anxiety. |

I think Crompton will play well and our overall linebacking talent should be higher than the '98 team. O-line and D-line were the reason we won the close games in '98 and they look weaker going into this year. The sacks allowed stat from last year is great but the OL has not shown that they can run block. Hopefully, Clawson's new OL formations will help that. |

I respectfully but STRONGLY disagree. Rico McCoy, Ellix Wilson, and either Adam Myers-White or Nevin McKenzie ARE NOT Al Wilson, Raynoch Thompson, or Eric Westmoreland. I would love for the new guys to match the play of the '98 corps, but I just don't see that happening. They'll be good--but '98 was great. |

Al was one of the best linebackers ever at UT. Thompson and Westmoreland were solid too. The starting 3 from '98 were better but the entire LB corps is better/deeper. Rico McCoy, G. Williams, Ellix Wilson, Nevin McKenzie, Nick Reveiz, Savion Frazier, Marlon Walls and Chris Donald might be the deepest unit we've ever had. Some of these guys need to prove themselves on the field but I don't see us having any shortage of LB talent next year. If Mayo had stayed, there wouldn't be any doubt that this is our best LB group ever. |

I don't see how you can say Ellix Wilson and Nevin McKenzie are as good as any of those guys. Ellix has started one game in his career and Nevin played LB half of last season. Rico is probably close to 98's level but 98 is still way better. |

| I agree.. gainesvol you are throwing names in there like Marlon Walls who isn't even on campus yet... How can he possibly be considered as part of our "deep and talented" LB corps? However, I will agree with you that outside of Wilson, Raynoch, and Eric Westmoreland our 98 team didn't really have any other solid LB's... |
