I personally like Pearl a lot, but to say his ethics are beyond reproach might be a bit of a leap.

"Negative recruiting" is expected and is not against the rules. It is a competition and competitions usually end up focusing on the negative. I would be disappointed to hear that Pearl was making false accusations about rival coaches, though. I'm not saying Pearl is a saint but he has a clean record with the NCAA and even though his allegations weren't proven to be true, it's pretty obvious that something was going on. People don't like a tattle tale but I would have done the same thing in his shoes. You don't have to like it but calling him unethical because of it is ridiculous and untrue.

In the example I cited above, folks were claiming that outright falsehoods were told. So it was more than "just pointing out problems" with the other program(s).

You don't think a large numbers of coaches from larger schools do that, both bball and fball?

Sec The author's rebuttal...

As editor of the web site the article in question was written for, I'd like to thank everyone for taking the time to read the article, but I must state that this was not written by a UK fan (yuck!). I also asked the author (and he felt the need) of the "Bruce Pearl: Savior or Destroyer?" article to respond to the comments that have been written on the message boards and in e-mails that I have received.

He felt the need to write a rebuttal (link below) to all of those upset by his original post and to clarify where his allegiances lie because being called a Kentucky fan is quite the blasphemous statement.

Does anybody remember?

Nashville sports talk was reporting that before hiring Billy G, UK had put out feelers to see if Pearl would be interested in the position. He promptly refused the meeting stating that he was staying loyal to the Vols. Pearl had a press release to calm the fears of the Big Orange Fathful.

I don't see much difference between Pearl and Coach Valvano. While he has been self-promoting, he has also been turning around a program mired in the cellar of the SEC since Don Devoe left.
