I have lived in Forsyth County in Alpharetta so I know the ATL area reasonably well. However I have never had to travel to Athens from Knoxville. What would you have to say about taking I-40 west, getting off after going through the Mtns and then taking Hwy 23/441 south straight into Athens? This is definitely a more direct path but I have never drove on 441 so I am not sure what type of road it is. Divided Hwy or 2 lane? Thanks for any help.

If you've got time and want a scenic drive, go for it. 441 from Clayton, GA to Athens is pretty much 4 lane all the way and is an easy road to drive. It's probably 1 1/2 hours from the GA/NC line to Athens. It's the drive from I-40 across the mountains on 441 in TN/NC that takes forever.

If you're going to go that way and need a place to spend the night, stay in Commerce at the intersection of 441 and I--85 about 20 minutes north of Athens.

Well I will have my girlfriend with me so the scenic route might be kinda nice and hopefully not too bad. I have drove the interstates in Atlanta plenty and it gets old, and I don't handle traffic very well. Would you say the time of travel is a little in favor of the 75/Atl route? I know it is hard to tell with traffic but give me your best shot. I honestly think it will take about 4 and a half hours either way and the mountain route is less mileage.

I think it is probably 4- 4 1/2 hrs on the interstate and probably 5 hours going cross country. Just depends on whether you can stand doing 45 through national park and how well you handle curvy mountain roads.

Amen. If you can hit Atlanta before 3pm on Friday, or after 7pm, you will have better luck.

No, the only reason I knew about this was because of it being posted in the UC. There was an Ad for it. It doesn't seem like a bad deal. $79 for students for a ticket, bus ride, and food.

hey buddy, dont stay in Atlanta. You're not gonna like it, especially with the traffic. if you can, stay in gainesville at the lake haha im just kidding, i dont even think we have hotels. seriously though, i would stay on the outskirts of atlanta, outside the perimeter, just to get away from all the traffic. now if your staying closer to lawrenceville, go 316, but if you're staying closer to buford, go 85 to 129. just watch out on 129 in arcade right before you get to pendergrass flea market, the cops there are pricks. its a 4 lane road, and i think the speed limit is 45. they'll pull you over for 5 over. ive seen it myself.

if anyone was wondering, Knoxville to Athens taking I-40 to Hwy 23/441 straight into Athens takes about 4 hours to 4hours and 15 minutes. Not a bad drive at all! I will be taking it again in October for the football game in Sanford! Go Vols

You made excellent time. The only time I've ever done it was in October during leaf season so maybe it was just the sightseers that slowed everything down so much. Glad you had a good trip.
