Football Spence "informally" offered OC job

$350,000

Scout.com: Rob Spence: The Latest

Quote:
Tennessee officials have made at least an informal offer to Spence, who has held the same position at Clemson the last three seasons, CUTigers.com has learned.

The offer is in the neighborhood of $350,000, which is substantially more than the $207,000 than Spence made in 2007.

However, all indications are that Spence will make his decision following Clemson’s Chick-fil-A Bowl game against Auburn on New Year’s Eve.

I'm disappointed. Looking at what Bowden has done at Clemson, I'm not sold on hiring one of his assistants:

1999 Clemson 6-6 Lost Peach Bowl (Mississippi State)
2000 Clemson 9-3 Lost Gator Bowl (Virginia Tech)
2001 Clemson 7-5 Won Humanitarian Bowl (Louisiana Tech)
2002 Clemson 7-6 Lost Tangerine Bowl (Texas Tech)
2003 Clemson 9-4 Won Peach Bowl (Tennessee)
2004 Clemson 6-5 Declined bowl bid as a self-imposed punishment for team fighting
2005 Clemson 8-4 Won Champs Sports Bowl (Colorado)
2006 Clemson 8-5 Lost Music City Bowl (Kentucky)
2007 Clemson 9-3 Chick-fil-A_Bowl (Auburn)

I think Spence took over when Bowden fired his entire staff in 04.

Hopefully, Spence's offense was being handcuffed by Tommy and he will bring in some new twists to UT. If not, let's hope we can hire some top notch position coaches.

looks like a top dog recruiter. Should fit into Fulmer's system real well. I hope looks are not everything because he looks like he takes his time about everything.

Needs a better picture or Corn Cob removal.

I'm eagerly awaiting all the reasons why this is a bad hire.

Well, all the people yelling for some form of the spread will get their wish. When Spence fails miserably, and he will, I would hope fans forget about formations and focus on competence when it comes to coaches.

I don't really think it would be a bad hire. I like Spence more than some of the other names I keep hearing over and over.

I certainly don't see why we would be worse off with this guy, I think we can do a little better than this guy. I think he will be more wide open then what we're use to seeing w/ Rut. Clemson has won more games over the last three seasons than we have @ UT (since Spence took over).

No opinion one way or the other...I'm not convinced there will be a real change in this team until Fulmer is gone but I'm willing to give him a chance.

Outside of the fact that he's been a coordinator at a mediocre BCS conference program that has consistently failed offensively in big games, I can't come up with one.
